A passion project of solo developer OO Cat, Shadow Dungeon features four classes at launch: Paladin, Ranger, Necromancer, and Mage. Each class has four skill trees, with 370 skills total, creating a dizzying range of build options. As a result, all characters can become overwhelmingly powerful with the right build, especially with synergistic equipment and upgrades. However, some classes definitely have advantages over others when it comes to survivability, damage output, and reliability.

All Shadow Dungeon Classes Ranked in Tier List 

S-tier

Necromancer

The Necromancer is undisputedly the best class in the game for solo dungeon crawling. Summoned minions soak up incoming damage and draw aggro, leaving you free to safely unleash spells from the backline.

Mage

The Mage passes straight into S-tier with its wide array of AoE spell options. Shadow Dungeon unleashes progressively larger hordes of enemies with every stage, making the Mage’s abundance of splash damage invaluable.

Even starting spells such as Lightning Ball can take out multiple enemies at once. Furthermore, the Mage can also summon minions to draw enemy aggro, with skills like Electric Sprite, improving survivability similar to the Necromancer.

A-tier

Paladin

The Paladin is an absolute unit in Shadow Dungeon, soaking up immense punishment with passive damage mitigation and healing abilities. The class is excellent for beginners to learn the ARPG’s mechanics without facing the game-over screen every time they are out of position. However, compared to the Necromancer and Mage, the Paladin needs greater skill investment to build up its damage, taking longer to clear early-to-mid game stages. 

B-tier

Ranger

The Ranger isn’t a bad class by any stretch of the imagination. It just takes comparatively longer for your build to snowball into screen-wiping territory. The class’ long range is perfect for sniping enemies at a distance, but its low baseline health and lack of early AoE options call for precise kiting maneuvers and good positioning.
