China’s Global Times accuses Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei of using AI safety concerns to contain China’s AI development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal to slow the pace of AI development has drawn criticism from China’s state-run Global Times, which accused the US tech industry of using AI safety concerns as a way to contain China’s technological progress.
In his essay, titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” Amodei argued that “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models” to give safety measures more time to keep up. He also proposed stronger coordination between AI companies and governments.
Global Times Accuses US Tech Industry of Targeting China
The Global Times argued that Amodei’s proposal goes beyond AI safety, pointing to his recommendations to restrict China’s access to powerful AI chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, crack down on AI model distillation, and strengthen security against model-weight theft.
Amodei wrote that democratic countries “must not be naive” when dealing with China, warning that unchecked Chinese AI development could create “geopolitical dominance.” He argued that the US should maintain its lead while pursuing global coordination with China on AI safety. The Global Times described the approach as a “silent AI Cold War,” arguing that it politicizes AI governance and seeks to widen the technological gap between China and the US.
The Chinese state-run outlet said attempts to exclude China from the global AI ecosystem would be difficult to achieve, arguing that cutting China out of global AI development could instead increase costs and risks associated with the technology.
