Biggest New Zombie Games Confirmed For 2026 & Beyond

Updated on October 31, 2026, by Mark Sammut: Happy Late Halloween! The spooky season might be almost over, but the future is absolutely stuffed with the walking dead. I’ve added two more upcoming zombie games: Never Be Alone and Ardemm.

While not at peak freshness, new zombie games are still a cause for celebration, even if 2026 hasn’t been particularly stacked with undead masterpieces. Still, we’ve received a couple of good games, like Stupid Never Dies, and the future seems pretty bright, with quite a few big zombie projects set for either this year or (hopefully) the next.

From open-world survival to hack-and-slash and beat ’em ups, the future features a fairly diverse lineup of upcoming zombie games, most of which are coming to PC and even consoles. Depending on what you are looking for, your next game could be arriving sooner rather than later.

Never Be Alone Looks Like An Incredible Open-World Zombie Game

Survive In A Dynamic World

Coming to Steam Early Access in December 2026, Never Be Alone has steadily garnered attention due to its stylish presentation and story-driven approach to open-world survival. The universe doesn’t lack sandbox zombie games that primarily boil down to “survive, build, and simply live,” but Never Be Alone sets itself apart by combining that concept with a reactive world filled with missions and NPCs. The developer emphasized dynamism in the story campaign but also the missions themselves, as they adapt to the players’ choices, failures, and rescued survivors, along with simple things like the time of day.

Balance the critic averages

For what seems to be a fairly small indie project, Never Be Alone looks great and seems to be ambitious as all heck. You will be able to switch between first- and third-person perspectives, which is always nice to see in these types of games. Crafting, base-building, farming, and scavenging are part of the gameplay loop, and the campaign is even voice-acted.

Beautiful Light Has More Than Just Zombies

Ever come across a game that sounds too good to be true? Steam is packed with them, and while it’s tempting to embrace the excitement, it’s best to keep expectations in check until the project actually drops. Beautiful Light could tap into two markets: extraction shooters and asymmetrical multiplayer games. While both are popular, we don’t have many great games in either genre, so a project that brings out the best of both worlds could really strike gold. Beautiful Light will try to do just that, and its ambition is admirable.

Touted as a PvPvPvE game, Beautiful Light casts most players as human soldiers who enter a zone with objectives to complete, and they will go up against other player teams and AI anomalies, which include zombies. The first big twist is that some anomalies will be controlled by a player, similar to something like Dead by Daylight or Evolve.

If executed well, this could create a fascinating, chaotic multiplayer experience, though we’ll need to see it in practice to know whether it works. The second big twist is that, unlike most extraction shooters, Beautiful Light is driven by mission goals and RPG progression rather than loot, which could remove the need to wipe out progress after players have unlocked all the best weapons.

Resident Evil Veronica Is Early 2027’s Biggest Zombie Game

The Capcom Remake Everyone Has Been Asking For

In an event filled with exciting announcements, Resident Evil Veronica still managed to feel like a BIG reveal at the Summer Game Fest. Capcom’s RE remakes are synonymous with excellence by now, but the publisher’s decision to stick to the numbered entries led to fears that Code Veronica wouldn’t get its moment in the spotlight. Fortunately, that proved not to be the case, and Claire Redfield should be making her long-awaited return in 2027.

So far, we don’t know much about the remake, except that Capcom plans to preserve the original game’s essence. However, the gameplay will be naturally modernized, and the story will also be reimagined to an extent. Regardless of how sweeping the changes prove to be, Resident Evil: Veronica seems destined to continue Capcom’s incredible hot streak, which extends all the way back to RE7.

Ardem Almost Sounds Too Good To Be True

An Open-World Zombie Survival Game That Reacts To You

While originally slated for a 2026 debut, Ardem has pushed back its Early Access launch until 2027 to allow time to implement more stability and development updates. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies have basically ended everything, your goal is to “switch it back on.” That’s right, players must try to bring infrastructure back to the world by restoring electricity, repairing bridges, building homes, upgrading vehicles, growing crops, and so on. We have to wait to see how this all plays out, but the game’s Steam page specifically says

Player actions permanently alter the conditions and structures of the world.

Therefore, we should have quite a bit of freedom and control. Ardem takes place in a 64 km² handcrafted world filled with unique locations that evolve depending on your actions. Servers will hold up to 64 players, and you can tailor your experience to focus on PvE, allow for PvP, or prefer to stick to strict role-playing. Ardem should be incredible in theory, but I recommend keeping expectations relatively grounded. Don’t get me wrong, this game could be fantastic, but plenty of indie open-world zombie survival games aimed for the stars but landed on their faces instead.

State Of Decay 3 Might Finally Come To Life In 2027

Xbox’s Zombie Survival Game Finally Escapes Development Hell

State of Decay 3 stereo luring zombies

After about 5 years, State of Decay 3 finally returned to the spotlight in June 2026’s Xbox Games Showcase. Frankly, we were starting to wonder if the game had been quietly canceled, but that’s fortunately not the case. Although they didn’t announce a specific day, the event revealed a 2027 release year.

Even if the original two titles weren’t necessarily amazing, their blend of zombie survival, crafting, and settlement management was and still is fresh, despite covering well-trodden ground. Built using Unreal Engine 5, State of Decay 3 looks pretty amazing and realistic; more importantly, the minute-to-minute gameplay seems superior as well. Still, we will need to learn more to decide whether this is a real step forward.

ILL Is Relentlessly Scary

A Realistic First-Person Horror Game That Looks Incredible And Terrifying

A monster in Ill

Blame it on desensitization, but zombies are not that scary anymore. Nowadays, they kind of feel like fodder enemies, and creators need to get creative to turn the undead into nightmares. Going by the available footage, ILL might be the scariest upcoming zombie game, and it seems to combine traditional corpse walkers with creative entities that should inspire a scream or two. Frankly, I want a game that is so intense and frightening that I have to think twice before playing it.

Obviously, I’ll still get it, but I want to experience that moment of hesitation again, as it has been too long. Of all the projects listed in this article, ILL is the only one that might accomplish this feat. The game’s Steam page advertises realism, body horror, dynamic enemies, diverse weapons, puzzles, resource management, and gore, and the footage showcases animation that looks absurdly smooth and impressive. As I’ve suggested before, we should keep expectations low to avoid setting the bar too high; that said, sometimes it is fun to get on the hype train.

Showa American Story Is Hack-and-Slash Undead Silliness

A Zombie Game That Combines Two Cultures

Gamescom 2026 came at just the nick of time. Seriously, I was just on the verge of removing Showa American Story from the lineup, as it started to seem like a release would never actually happen; however, a new trailer finally dropped, and it looks pretty promising. While I don’t know exactly what to expect from this game, Nekcom describes it as an “RPG steeped in retro pop culture.”

Set in an alternate reality where Japan colonized America, Chigusa Choko returns from the grave to find the world has entered its post-apocalyptic phase, which means she’ll have to ride a cool bike across the States while carrying an even cooler blade. Showa American Story blends hack-and-slash combat with RPG elements, third-person shooting, and zombie horror, all set in a world that fuses Japanese and American cultures.

Honestly, the setting seems to be the most fascinating part, and we’ll hopefully get to see more of that sooner rather than later. The Steam page still lists “2026” as its release year, but that seems unlikely now.

Canyons Lets You Take On The Awakened With Friends

A Zombie Co-Op Looter Shooter

From the same developer behind the Breathedge games comes Canyons, a co-op PvE looter shooter. While we do get quite a few of these types of games, they are generally quite fun, and this release seems to also accommodate solo players who just want to kill monsters in a unique Mad Max-esque world.

A world once full of water, life, and growing technology has fallen to the Awakened — the fusion of the living and the lifeless.

Set in what looks to be a rather gorgeous wasteland, Canyons delivers high-octane action and a sense of progression through a hub area that you can expand yourself. While you can head out alone, you are meant to form a crew, although that goes beyond just teaming up with other crusaders. You will be able to forge pacts with Awakened creatures, along with seeking alliances with factions.

Awakened hordes are among Canyons‘ biggest selling points, with their density adapting to the number of players in the team.

Canyons is targeting a November 2027 release.

Hunger Drops You In Zombie-Infested Napoleonic Europe

Whenever a plague breaks out, you know zombies will be right around the corner. HUNGER shakes things up by taking place in Napoleonic Europe, describing this hell as “World After the End.” It is also another extraction shooter, as that genre’s popularity continues to grow at a rate that might prove alarming in the long run.

HUNGER will enter Steam Early Access before making its full debut, with the developers planning to launch with three maps, 30+ weapons, and a variety of gadgets and tools. More importantly, HUNGER markets itself as a “deep, first-person RPG,” using the extraction structure to frame quests and progression. Along with unlocking and developing skills, players can also choose a profession focused on crafting or gathering, allowing them to create items to sell on the marketplace.
