Dungeons and Dragons has officially revealed a plethora of new subclasses and species players can choose from when building their characters, all with an Underdark theming. The D&D character options come from the newest edition of the game’s Unearthed Arcana playtest content.
The 2024 revision to Dungeons and Dragons‘ popular fifth edition has already given players multiple options to build unique characters. The new revision to the Player’s Handbook includes a total of 12 classes to choose from, with each class featuring 4 different subclasses based on different playstyles. Subsequent releases have added a multitude of new classes, subclasses, and species, including the Artificer class, Bladesinger Wizard subclass, and Dhampir species. Now, Wizards of the Coast is giving some players an abundance of new options themed around creatures found in the Underdark.
Dungeons and Dragons Adds New Subclasses, Species
- Freedom Domain subclass (Cleric)
- Circle of Spores subclass (Druid)
- Faerzress Sorcery subclass (Sorcerer)
- Deep Imaskari species
- Drider species
- Illithidkin species
- Kuo-toa species
- Myconid species
The newest update to Dungeons and Dragons‘ Unearthed Arcana playtest content adds three new subclasses and five species to the game. Players choosing to create a Cleric in Dungeons and Dragons can now choose the Freedom Domain, which includes a Channel Divinity similar to the Freedom of Movement spell and “freedom from wearing armor.” Druids gain the Circle of Spores subclass as an option through the playtest, including the ability to resurrect corpses with spores, similar to Myconids, and gaining access to telepathy through the subclass. The Faerzress Sorceress puts the focus on manipulation, offering everything from enhancing Darkvision to “granting magical properties to mundane weapons.”
Five new species themed around the Underdark make up the majority of the new content. Players now have the option to make their character a Deep Imaskari, which is said to “create light wherever it goes,” or a fearsome Drider, a combination of a drow and a spider. Many of Dungeons and Dragons‘ new species will likely be familiar to fans of Baldur’s Gate 3, including the Illithidkin, who have been experimented on by Mind Flayers, and the Myconids, fungus-like people found inhabiting much of the Underdark. The Kuo-Toa are also being added to Dungeons and Dragons‘ 2024 edition with the new playtest, giving them a unique version of the Find Familiar spell.
Dungeons and Dragons‘ new content comes after the beloved tabletop RPG has already seen plenty of exciting content in 2026. D&D has already welcomed the release of multiple major rulebooks for the 2024 edition throughout the year, including the Gothic horror-inspired Ravenloft: The Horrors Within and the recently-released Arcana Unleashed, which focuses on adding multiple new spells. Dungeons and Dragons also has multiple major crossovers on the way in the future, revealing a World of Warcraft expansion launching in late 2026 and a Star Wars collab releasing in 2027.
Alongside its multitude of new rulebooks and expansions, Dungeons and Dragons has a major video game project on the way. Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios officially revealed Warlock: Dungeons and Dragons as a single-player action-adventure game at the 2025 Game Awards. Warlock touted its unique magic system in a showcase at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, combining spells to create free-flowing magical combat. With plenty of expansions on the way for the RPG and a new game in the works, Dungeons and Dragons fans should have much to look forward to.
