Chipotle is adding a brand-new chip flavor to its menu for the first time

Chipotle is turning a viral customer food hack into an official menu item with the launch of its new Chili Lime Chips.

The new side arrives alongside the return of Pollo Asado on August 31, marking the first time in Chipotle’s history that the chain has launched two limited-time menu items simultaneously.

Chili Lime Chips will initially be available exclusively to Chipotle Rewards members through digital orders beginning August 31. They will then roll out to all customers on September 4 for a limited time.

The new chips were inspired by customers bringing packaged seasoned chips to Chipotle and using them with their meals.

Some customers have used chips instead of forks to eat their bowls, while others crush them over their food or pour entire bowls into chip bags to create their own version of a walking taco.

According to Chipotle, social media mentions of seasoned chips being paired with its food have increased by more than 1,500% since 2022. Related content on TikTok and Instagram has generated approximately 96 million engagements.

Chipotle developed Chili Lime Chips as its own version of the trend, made without artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

“At the same time, we saw guests hacking their Chipotle orders with packaged chips and asked ourselves: What would this look like done the Chipotle way? Chili Lime Chips are our answer—with no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives and an ingredient list that doesn’t require a chemistry degree to understand,” Chief Brand Officer Fernando Machado said.

“One menu item generated real momentum before going national; the other was inspired directly by how our fans eat Chipotle. Together, they gave us two compelling reasons to do something we’ve never done before and launch both at once.”

The chips are launching alongside a revamped version of Pollo Asado, which features grilled adobo chicken seasoned with garlic, Mexican spices and hand-cut cilantro before being finished with citrus and real lime.

“With this new recipe, we wanted to bring more brightness and dimension to Pollo Asado while preserving its savory, smoky flavor,” Senior Vice President of Culinary Nevielle Panthaky said. “The citrus finish cuts through the smoky notes of the chicken and naturally complements the tangy, spiced seasoning of our Chili Lime Chips.”

Pollo Asado is available to customers in the US and Canada beginning August 31. Chipotle is also offering a $0 delivery fee on qualifying Pollo Asado orders placed through its website or app through September 13.

Chipotle is also playing a role in another fast food promotion launching August 31.

Domino’s is giving customers a free personal Detroit-style pizza after they purchase one of several rival menu items, with a Chipotle burrito among the qualifying options alongside the Big Mac, Whopper, Crunchwrap Supreme and Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich.
