Skyrim just recruited a real actor to voice a piece of Swedish flat-pack furniture, and somehow it works?
Sure, Bethesda has leaned into weird crossovers before, but pairing a beloved bookcase with a Bafta-winning voice is new territory, especially since it lands only weeks after IKEA teamed up with Xbox on an actual furniture line for gamers. Clearly, the flat-pack giant isn’t done colonizing our screens, and so it decided to send in reinforcements.
So long FUS-RO-DAH, hello AYE-KEY-YAH
What We Do in the Shadows star Matt Berry has officially joined The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, lending his unmistakable baritone to Kallax Storageborn, a fully voiced companion modeled on IKEA’s iconic Kallax storage unit.
Bethesda Game Studios and IKEA built the crossover as a free Creation featuring a full quest, two IKEA-themed dungeons, and a boss fight against something called the Clutter Golem.
Kallax can carry your gear and keep you from getting over-encumbered, and he even answers to a custom Dragon Shout, AYE-KEY-YAH, which is terribly clever and unsubtle. On top of that, players can also wield a Dwemer Allen Key and don a Meatball Helmet, just for good measure.
This might sound like an April Fools’ joke to you, but IKEA is well aware we’re in September; to them, this is just part of their mission statement: “At IKEA, we believe in creating a better everyday life for the many people — and why shouldn’t that include their digital lives?” said IKEA exec Kemi Anthony, adding that Skyrim’s modding community made it the perfect fantasy world to test the brand’s storage credentials.
As for Berry, this isn’t exactly his first rodeo, either. Besides being What We Do in The Shadows’ most deviant bastard in New York Citay, he also voices Bane in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, popped up in 2024’s indie hit Thank Goodness You’re Here!, and next year he’ll show up in both Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and A Minecraft Movie Squared.
You never know though… voicing a bookcase might end up being the role he’s remembered for. The Kallax Storageborn Creation goes live for free today via Bethesda’s in-game Creations menu, so there’s no excuse left for wandering Skyrim over-encumbered.
Real brands keep sneaking into fantasy worlds this way, and Bethesda’s furniture cameo follows right on the heels of Monster Hunter Wilds’ meal-box team-up with KFC, proof that hunters and dragon slayers alike can’t resist a good corporate crossover either.
