Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has received a sizable new update on the Switch 2, with the download reportedly weighing around 39GB. Despite its substantial size, the patch appears to largely replace existing Modern Warfare 4 files rather than significantly increase the game’s overall storage footprint on Nintendo’s handheld console.
Modern Warfare 4 is the first new series entry on Nintendo hardware in 13 years, since Call of Duty: Ghosts launched on the Wii U in 2013. It originally launched on October 23 following a week-long early access period limited to a subset of its gameplay modes. The massive day-one Modern Warfare 4 patch already made its way to the Switch 2 that day, with this subsequent release seemingly being unique to Nintendo’s hybrid system.
Modern Warfare 4 Now Takes Up Around 91GB on Switch 2
According to several user reports, the new Switch 2 weighs around 39GB. However, the game’s post-update installation size is said to sit at 91.3GB. The latter figure is only modestly above the 84.9GB size reported from Nintendo eShop data before launch, indicating that much of the new download is replacing existing files instead of simply being added to them. Large downloads that reorganize existing data have long been a common practice for Call of Duty games.
The 39GB download was initially available only on the Switch 2, but Activision has since published October 24 patch notes for a smaller update released across all platforms. The patch improves spawn locations and respawn timing on Hijack, addresses several crashes and stability issues, fixes a Search and Destroy exploit involving bomb defusal, and resolves multiple DMZ problems affecting the Exfil helicopter, AI reinforcements, and Active Duty Operators. No new maps, weapons, or modes are listed among the October 24 changes. Because the developers have yet to disclose update sizes for every version of Modern Warfare 4, it remains unclear whether the Switch 2 download and the subsequent PlayStation, Xbox, and PC release are the same update, though that appears plausible given Infinity Ward’s usual M.O.

Modern Warfare 4 Uses More Than a Third of Switch 2’s Internal Storage
At roughly 91GB, Modern Warfare 4 now occupies more than a third of the Switch 2’s nominal 256GB of internal storage. As with all modern platforms, the amount that is actually available for games is lower because some capacity is reserved for operating system data, making the shooter’s share of usable storage larger still. Switch 2 owners can expand that capacity with microSD Express cards, which Nintendo supports in sizes up to 2TB. However, 2TB cards are not yet commercially available, with 1TB being the largest capacity that can be bought as of October 2026.
While 2TB microSD Express cards had previously been expected to reach the market around mid-2027, that timeline remains uncertain amid the ongoing memory shortage. NAND flash supply is currently constrained in part by strong AI-related storage demand, although industry forecasts suggest conditions could begin easing in the second half of 2027 as additional capacity comes online. That uncertainty makes it less likely that 2TB microSD Express cards will arrive on the previously anticipated schedule. Such products could therefore slip into 2028 or even later and are likely to command a premium at launch. For reference, most current 1TB cards suitable for the Switch 2 already retail for (sometimes well) over $300.
