After learning of the midterm election results, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed his followers through a video. On his personal  X account, the mayor posted a brief video breaking down how the American people united to make some change. Democrats had won control of both chambers of Congress the night before. He went further in a statement.

“Last night’s election proved: working people expect more from their government, and they’re tired of waiting. JD Vance asked for a couple more years to finally fulfill the promises he’d made to our country. Working people can’t afford another two years to make rent due this month, child care for their kids, or groceries for their family.”

Zohran Mamdani became mayor on January 1, 2026, after defeating Andrew Cuomo. He is the city’s first Muslim mayor and a democratic socialist. He campaigned on freezing some rents, free buses, and higher taxes on the rich.

At City Hall, he tied the sweep to JD Vance’s September plea on the All-In podcast. The vice president asked voters for “another chance” and “another couple of years.” Mamdani called the result a referendum on that request.

Musk drew sharper criticism. SpaceX’s June listing made him the world’s first trillionaire, with a fortune Bloomberg put at $1.1 trillion. Mamdani said that wealth rests on costs ordinary families absorb, including power bills and land lost to data centers. Mamdani read the result as a verdict on that gap.

He also went after campaign money. Musk gave $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which routed it to a Texas PAC backing Ken Paxton. James Talarico, his Democratic rival, said the system lets one trillionaire buy a personal senator.

“People are tired of being told there isn’t enough to go around while Elon Musk becomes the world’s first trillionaire. They are tired of being told to sacrifice their land and water for data centers.”

Winning, Mamdani argued, is the easier part. He wants Democrats to use their new majorities on rent, child care, and groceries. Voters, he said, will judge the party on delivery.

“Now it’s time for us in the Democratic Party to deliver. My friends, it’s morning again in America.”
