A thread on X claiming that AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are “cannibalizing” their biggest customers is going viral. In this post, X user Ole Lehmann cited various examples to justify his claim that the AI giants are undercutting their own corporate clients in sectors like drug development, design, and others. According to the analysis, the Frontier Labs are leveraging partnerships to identify and launch competitive first-party products.

Lehmann claimed that the phenomenon has already started because it is “too profitable” for companies like OpenAI and Anthropic:

“Should be obvious by now, but OpenAI and Anthropic are just gonna keep cannibalizing all their biggest customers. It’s simply too profitable for them to resist. And it’s already happening.”

Ole Lehmann’s post was in reply to @chamath, who shared the story about Anthropic getting into drug development.

Ole Lehmann provides a detailed list of high-profile cases in which AI labs allegedly undercut their own clients to launch competing products. Lehmann’s first target was Anthropic’s CPO, who resigned from Figma’s board days before the launch of Claude Design. Claude Design’s generative UI, prototype, and mockups target users that traditionally make up Figma’s core. A report from Progressive Robot noted the move indicates that:

“Frontier Labs are no longer content to be model suppliers alone.”

The X post also cites similar cases involving Anthropic in other sectors like biotechnology, where Claude Science is a direct competitor for clients like Novo Nordisk and Benchling.

Ole Lehmann also criticized OpenAI for similar cases, especially highlighting their partnership with Microsoft. He claims that despite billions in capital investment, OpenAI encroached on Microsoft territory by building product layers for recruiting platforms and code repositories. Lehmann notes that this means OpenAI is directly competing with LinkedIn and GitHub, both owned by Microsoft.

Lehmann pointed to several other specialized clients falling victim to the same strategy:

  • Legal: Harvey’s legal assistant model is now challenged by Claude for Legal.
  • Customer Support: Intercom’s Fin Voice faces direct pressure from OpenAI’s Presence.
  • Healthcare: Clinical documentation startups Abridge and Ambience are seeing their market overlap with ChatGPT for Healthcare.

According to Ole Lehmann, OpenAI and Anthropic’s playbook to cannibalize customers is a four-step cycle:

“1. sell their models to the world’s most valuable businesses

2. help wire them into those companies’ most valuable and sensitive work

3. map the business from the inside and find where AI can take over

4. turn those capabilities into their own products and become the customer’s competitor”
