Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed reposted a Michigan Democratic Party message on X in the closing days of the campaign. He has spent the final stretch telling Michigan voters that abortion is on the ballot when they vote on November 3, 2026.

“A vote for Mike Rogers is a vote for a national abortion ban. Let me say that again. A vote for Mike Rogers is a vote for a national abortion ban.”

That warning rests on Rogers’ congressional record. The Republican says he would not undo the abortion rights Michigan voters added to the state constitution in 2022. Bridge Michigan’s fact check found he co-sponsored the Life at Conception Act in 2013 and voted for a 20-week ban. Bridge Michigan also traced a 2005 bill that would have suspended FDA approval of mifepristone, an abortion drug. Rogers co-sponsored it.

El-Sayed is a former Detroit health department director who beat Rep. Haley Stevens in a tight August primary. He would be the first Muslim senator if he wins. He has campaigned against Trump as much as against Rogers.

Trump has attacked his faith, his family, and his name throughout the race. El-Sayed answered at a Kalamazoo rally on Oct. 29 with a dare. “I’ll go through a metal detector if you’ll sit for a lie detector,” he said. His first questions, he said, would cover Epstein and the 2020 election.

When a questioner at a Caro town hall asked him to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood, he said, “Sure, yes, absolutely.”

He has shown similar confidence about Rogers. El-Sayed says the Republican would be a reliable vote for Trump’s agenda on health care, schools, and unions. El-Sayed kept repeating the consequence he sees if Rogers wins a seat. A federal ban, he argues, would erase the protection Michiganders approved in 2022.
