McDonald’s Japan revives Vtuber Usada Pekora “almond” meme with new McFlurry flavor

McDonald’s Japan appears to be turning one of hololive VTuber Usada Pekora’s longest-running memes into a promotion for its new McFlurry flavor.

The company posted a short video to X on September 15 with the caption, “Wait, what do you hear?” The clip shows a rabbit-eared, blue-haired character resembling Pekora holding a cup of the new McFlurry Meiji Almond Chocolate.

The image includes a © COVER copyright notice, linking the artwork to Cover Corporation, the company behind hololive. It also includes a disclaimer stating that the image is for illustrative purposes and that the actual packaging may differ.

Pekora is one of hololive’s most popular VTubers and is known for her rabbit-themed design and distinctive greeting. She often ends her introduction with “doumo doumo,” which fans have long joked sounds like “almond almond.” The McDonald’s video appears to reference that meme directly by pairing Pekora’s likeness with an almond-flavored dessert and asking viewers what they hear.

Fans immediately connected the teaser to Pekora, with several Japanese users repeating the “almond almond” joke and speculating that another McDonald’s collaboration was on the way.

McDonald’s and Pekora have collaborated before

This would not be the first time McDonald’s Japan has worked with Pekora. In September 2024, the chain teased a rabbit-eared character before announcing a sponsored “Tsukimi delivery” livestream with the VTuber. Pekora encouraged fans to order McDonald’s Tsukimi menu items while watching the broadcast.

Game Watch reported on the 2024 collaboration, which came after Pekora had repeatedly talked about her love of McDonald’s Tsukimi burgers during streams.

The new McFlurry launches across Japan on September 16 for ¥370 or more. According to McDonald’s official announcement, it combines chopped almonds and two chocolate sauces to recreate the flavor of Meiji Almond Chocolate. It is scheduled to remain available until mid-October, while supplies last.

There is currently no indication that Pekora will receive a Happy Meal toy or that her likeness will appear on the physical McFlurry packaging. McDonald’s current Happy Set lineup features Plarail and Sumikkogurashi toys, while the official McFlurry campaign only confirms limited original packaging.

For now, the teaser points to a social media promotion built around Pekora’s “almond” meme. McDonald’s Japan may reveal more when the McFlurry officially launches.
