DoorDash is testing a new text-based ordering system that lets customers place orders by simply messaging the delivery service with what they want.
DoorDash co-founder Andy Fang revealed the feature on September 30, explaining that users can text DoorDash to order food without going through the usual process of searching for a restaurant, building a cart, and checking out through the app.
The feature is currently in beta in the US, with DoorDash operating a waitlist for customers interested in trying it.
DoorDash text ordering can remember your usual orders
According to Fang, the system is designed to learn from customers’ repeat orders while also helping them find deals and new restaurants.
“You can now just text DoorDash and let it order for you. It’s proactive, learns from your repeat orders, and helps you find the best deals and new spots,” Fang said.
Customers can send straightforward requests such as “Order my usual from Souvla,” with DoorDash handling the ordering process from there. Fang said there is no additional setup required to start making requests.
The system can also be added to a group text, allowing multiple people to submit their orders through the same conversation.
DoorDash is expanding the concept beyond restaurant orders as well. Fang said customers can send a photo of their fridge and ask the service to identify missing ingredients for a recipe. DoorDash can then arrange for those ingredients to be delivered.
“We believe agents are a new app paradigm and are building for that future at DoorDash, with a lot more to come,” Fang said.
The text-based ordering feature remains in beta in the US, and DoorDash has not announced when it will become more widely available.
The text-ordering beta is one of several new technologies DoorDash is testing to change how customers place and receive orders.
The company also unveiled its own delivery drone, which averaged under five minutes from restaurant to doorstep during early tests and is set to launch with partners including Chipotle and Popeyes.
