ChatGPT is reportedly gaining a new way to work with Apple Messages, as per a Polymarket report on August 20, 2026. The new move gives users the option to let the AI assistant search conversations, find information, and even send messages for them.

Once switched on, the AI assistant can dig through a user’s iMessage, SMS, and RCS threads, pull up relevant conversations, and put together or fire off replies without the person having to open Messages at all.

The idea, per the company, is to cut out the manual back-and-forth of hunting for old texts or typing out routine responses. A user could, for instance, ask ChatGPT to check what a friend said last week about weekend plans, or have it scan the inbox for anything that looks like spam.

When the plugin is turned on, a person can ask ChatGPT to hunt down a particular exchange, summarize what was discussed, or write a reply based on the context of the thread.

As per 9to5 Mac, the tool can go a step further and actually push that message out through Messages on the user’s behalf. However, OpenAI hasn’t handed over full control by default. Before anything is sent, the app checks in with the user to confirm both the wording of the message and who it’s going to.

For anyone who finds that confirmation step tedious, there’s a workaround. Users can flip on standing approval for a specific conversation thread, which lets ChatGPT keep sending to that one chat without asking each time.

OpenAI’s Apple Messages Move Comes Amid Lawsuit

OpenAI is rolling out its reported Apple Messages integration at a messy time, as the company remains locked in a legal dispute with Apple that started on July 10, 2026.

According to Stocktwits, Apple sued OpenAI last month along with two former Apple employees who later joined the AI company. Apple accused them of taking trade secrets after leaving the company.

The lawsuit alleges that OpenAI encouraged the former employees to provide confidential information connected to Apple’s upcoming products. This allegedly included product specifications, drawings, components, and other internal material that could have helped OpenAI with its plans to develop consumer hardware.

OpenAI has rejected Apple’s allegations and has argued that the lawsuit lacks merit. The company has also pushed back against Apple’s account of how the former employees handled confidential information.
