Apple reveals $1,999 iPhone Duo with biggest iPhone shake-up in years

Apple has officially revealed the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone and one of the biggest changes to the smartphone since the original iPhone launched.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display that unfolds into a much larger 7.6-inch screen. Apple says it becomes the thinnest iPhone ever when opened, while iOS 27 has been redesigned to take advantage of the folding form factor.

Apple’s first foldable will be available in star white and night sky. Pre-orders begin October 16 ahead of its release on October 23, and it will cost $1999.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone has two displays

The iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max display. A nano-texture finish is designed to reduce glare and make the crease less visible.

On the outside is a 5.4-inch display that Apple says provides 90% of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both displays support ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.

Apple has also hidden a FaceTime camera underneath the inner display, while Touch ID is built into the side button instead of using Face ID. Apple Pencil support is coming later in 2026.

The phone is made from Grade 5 titanium and uses a hinge made from more than 100 components. It also carries an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

iOS 27 takes advantage of the foldable design

Apple has redesigned iOS 27 to adapt depending on how the iPhone Duo is positioned, folded, or rotated.

Split View allows two apps to run side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Users can save pairs of apps, open two windows from the same app and use Siri AI alongside another app. Apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already being adapted for the larger folding display.

StandBy also works when the Duo isn’t charging, allowing it to act as a clock, photo frame or widget hub when placed partially folded on a surface.

The folding design also introduces new camera features. Users can take selfies with the rear cameras while using the outer display as a preview, while Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the shot before it’s taken.

iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as iPhone 18 Pro

The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Apple says the phone delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, helped by a custom vapor chamber designed to manage heat.

There is a battery on each side of the foldable. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner screen or 44 hours using the outer display. Using both displays equally provides up to 24 hours of use per charge.

The Duo can reach 50% charge in around 20 minutes using wired charging or around 30 minutes wirelessly.

For cameras, Apple has included a 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x optical-quality zoom and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The main camera can also record 4K video at 120fps.
