Former Anthropic employee believes that both leading AI organizations are acting irresponsibly with the tool.

Ex-Anthropic employee, Jacob Coxon, recently took to his X account to share some information about the risk of AI development now. He wrote that as a former employee of both Anthropic and OpenAI, he noted that both companies were acting irresponsibly with the tool. He even said that the companies were gambling with people’s lives with their race for success.
Speaking about why he resigned from Anthropic, the former employee wrote,
“I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives.”
Speaking about the speed of progress with AI, Coxon revealed that the people working on AI know that it possesses the power to become a real threat, but continued to work on it anyway.
“The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible – but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.”
Coxon also opened up about why the organizations continued to work on AI despite knowing about all the risks involved with its progress.
Former Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon reveals why companies like Anthropic and OpenAI were still working on AI despite the threats it poses
In a string of X posts, Coxon opened up about how AI would pose a threat to human civilization and why it should not be taken lightly. He wrote,
“Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing.”
He even addressed the issue of why these companies continued to work on AI if they are aware of the harm it poses.
“A common response is “if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?” At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first – they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk.”
However, he ended his X rant by calling upon lab researchers, asking them about where they stood on the AI debate.
“If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because “it’s happening anyway” – or take this moment to call for different conditions?”
AI has become a topic of intense conversation as of now, with people like Elon Musk and POTUS Donald Trump participating in the discussion as well.
