Star Trek Online players are holding in-game vigils for Sir Patrick Stewart, and many now want the game’s developers to make their tribute to Captain Picard permanent.
The tributes began shortly after the death of Patrick Stewart at the age of 86 was announced on October 29. Players gathered at Earth Spacedock, Starfleet Academy and the Klingon homeworld Qo’noS to pay their respects.
Star Trek Online players form an honor guard for Picard
Outside Earth Spacedock, around 40 to 50 Galaxy-class ships, the same class as Picard’s USS Enterprise-D, lined up in what players called an honor guard before setting off fireworks.
At Starfleet Academy, crowds of players held torches aloft, with the gathering growing throughout the evening.
The turnout gave the 16-year-old MMO a noticeable boost, with around 2,000 players online that night compared to its usual 1,200 or so.
The game’s official account also paid tribute to Stewart, writing that “in an era where no one was sure whether Star Trek HAD a future, your warmth and your sturdiness gave us hope.” It called him “a knight in the truest sense of the word.”
Many players now want something more permanent, a popular r/sto post is asking Cryptic Studios to recreate Château Picard, the Picard family vineyard in France, as a place “where players from all factions can gather, remember him, and pay their respects.”
Others have suggested a statue of Picard at Starfleet Academy, along with a memorial plaque.
There’s precedent for it. After Leonard Nimoy died in 2015, Star Trek Online added statues of Spock and memorial plaques to the game.
Cryptic has not yet responded to the requests.
