Motorists reportedly stopped on a Los Angeles freeway to pick up tubs of cheese balls after a truck accidentally dumped around 120 containers across the road.
The unusual opportunity for some free snacks came during rush hour on August 25, when the load fell from a pickup truck traveling on the westbound 105 Freeway in Lynwood.
California Highway Patrol said it received reports that some drivers had pulled over and started collecting containers that were still sealed following the spill. Nobody was reported injured in the incident.
LA freeway blocked as 120 tubs of cheese spill onto road
Videos from the scene showed just how much cheese was involved. Dozens of plastic tubs could be seen spread across the freeway, while hundreds of individual orange cheese balls covered the asphalt after some of the containers burst open.
The spill happened near the Long Beach Boulevard on-ramp shortly after 5 PM, with the debris causing problems for motorists already making their way through evening traffic.
One lane was temporarily taken out of action as a result. The carpool lane was blocked while the containers and loose snacks were removed from the freeway.
Despite the sheer amount of cheese involved, the incident didn’t result in a lengthy closure. Crews cleared the debris and the affected lane was eventually reopened. It hasn’t been confirmed exactly how the truck managed to lose its cargo.
While a few motorists apparently saw the spill as an opportunity to take home an unexpected snack, the containers that weren’t claimed faced a less appetizing fate as crews worked to get the 105 moving again.
Strangely, this isn’t even the first cheese-related disruption we’ve seen on the roads recently. A similar incident in Quebec saw a truck carrying mac and cheese mix spill its contents onto the highway, causing a major traffic jam.
