A utility worker in Venezuela has gone viral after using bottles of soda to put out a blazing electrical transformer in a dangerous maneuver that could have ended in disaster.
The incident occurred on November 2 in Valle de la Pascua, Venezuela, where a worker reportedly employed by the state-owned electricity company Corpoelec found himself facing a transformer engulfed in flames.
Rather than reaching for a fire extinguisher, however, the man decided to use something considerably less conventional: two-liter bottles of soda, identified as the Venezuelan brand ‘Glup’.
Quick-thinking worker puts out fire with soda bottles
The employee was elevated in the bucket of a maintenance truck when he began shaking the bottles and launching them toward the burning equipment.
Footage of the incident shows the worker throwing the bottles directly at the transformer before immediately ducking for cover as flames erupt toward his position.
He repeated the process three times, with the fire dying down after his efforts.
But how did it actually work? Carbonated drinks contain carbon dioxide (CO2), which can help suppress flames by displacing oxygen, while the liquid itself may have helped cool the burning equipment.
The extraordinary footage quickly spread across social media, with viewers stunned by the worker’s unconventional firefighting technique.
However, experts have warned that the stunt was incredibly dangerous and could have cost the worker his life.
XSpeaking to Venezuelan outlet El Pitazo, electrical engineer Jesús Olivares explained that the carbon dioxide in fizzy drinks does not make them a safe substitute for specialized fire extinguishers.
He warned that the liquid could conduct electricity, potentially causing a fatal shock, while the sudden bursts of flames also put the worker at serious risk of burns.
Olivares also questioned the apparent lack of protective equipment, noting that the employee appeared to be working without essential safety gear.
Although the flames appeared to subside, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and there has been no confirmation of whether anyone was injured.
