Wendy’s brings back iconic yellow packaging after years of customer requests

Wendy’s is turning back the clock by bringing its iconic yellow packaging back to restaurants following years of requests from nostalgic customers.

The fast food chain confirmed that its burgers, nuggets, fries and Frostys will soon be served in the bright yellow cups, wrappers and boxes once closely associated with the brand.

Wendy’s Chief Marketing and Customer Growth Officer Tariq Hassan told USA Today that its return was driven by overwhelming demand.

“Fans asked. Constantly,” Hassan said. “It’s one of the most requested things we’ve ever had come back.”

Wendy’s yellow packaging returns nationwide in September

Wendy’s confirmed that the throwback packaging will begin rolling out at restaurants nationwide starting on September 28 and continue appearing into 2027.

The chain used yellow packaging for decades after opening its first restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969. Its containers eventually shifted to the red and white branding currently found across most locations.

“Like any brand, Wendy’s has refreshed its look and feel over time, and our packaging evolved along with it,” Hassan explained.

According to Hassan, the old design reminds customers of childhood trips to Wendy’s, including visits with friends after school and family celebrations over a Frosty.

“That kind of emotional connection is powerful and you can’t design it into packaging. It’s created in those special moments and something all brands hope to earn: a meaningful place in people’s lives.”

The nostalgia-driven move follows at least one Wendy’s location reviving its infamous nine-patty T-Rex Burger as part of a limited eating challenge.

Other fast food brands have embraced their histories as well. A Pizza Hut franchisee has been restoring dozens of restaurants to their classic 1980s appearance, complete with red cups, checkered tablecloths, arcade machines and salad bars.
