A viral DIY project by daltonm17, shared by Pablo Rochat on Instagram, has turned an ordinary tennis ball into a walking, or rather flying, parody of professional tennis, rigging it to emit a loud human grunt every time it’s struck or bounces off the court.
The build works by slicing open a standard tennis ball, packing a compact circuit inside, and resealing the seam so the ball stays fully playable.
How the grunt actually gets triggered
A tiny sensor inside the ball picks up on the shock of every hit and bounce, instantly sending a signal to a Bluetooth speaker sitting courtside.
The speaker then plays a pre-loaded grunt sound, timed perfectly with the impact.
Grunting has become synonymous with tennis over the years, from the deadpan silence of the crowds at Wimbledon contrasted by sporting legends such as Monica Seles and Maria Sharapova, whose grunts have come to be seen as a tactic to distract their opponents rather than simply expel effort on the court.
Viewers have already started asking for other sound options to be swapped in. “I wish it sounded like that clip from American Dad,” one commenter wrote. Another added: “Please make it Michael Jackson noises.” A third simply requested: “Put the sound effects from Wii Sports plssss.”
