A tractor-trailer carrying more than 20 tons of squid overturned in Rhode Island, spilling much of its load across the road and shutting down traffic for several hours.
The incident happened in Narragansett, Rhode Island on Sunday, August 16, as the truck was attempting to turn onto Point Judith Road. The trailer became dislodged from the cab and overturned, according to the Narragansett Police Department.
The truck was carrying squid to an out-of-town processing facility when it overturned. Police said a “substantial portion” of the load spilled onto the roadway, blocking all lanes of traffic.
Crews called in to clean up massive squid spill
Authorities responded to the reported tractor-trailer rollover at approximately 9:27 am. Officers determined that the vehicle had been negotiating the turn onto Point Judith Road when its trailer separated from the cab and tipped onto its side.
Footage from the scene showed raw squid scattered across the roadway as crews used heavy equipment to scoop up the spilled load.
“Squid has a distinctive odor,” a fisherman told NBC 10. “I use squid for bait, so I’m used to it, but it can be very foul-smelling, especially if it lands on the road and stays there for a while.”
The overturned trailer and its cargo caused “significant traffic disruptions and an extended road closure,” police said.
The Narragansett Police and Fire Departments worked alongside other authorities to manage traffic and clear the spill. Crews also sprayed down the road as part of the cleanup effort.
The road eventually reopened after several hours. Neither the driver nor the passenger inside the tractor-trailer was injured.
Rhode Island State Police cited the operator for failure to secure a load, according to ABC News.
The squid incident comes just weeks after another unusual truck spill caused problems on the road.
In July, a semitrailer carrying 40,000 pounds of Frank’s RedHot began leaking sauce along Interstate 71 in Ohio, prompting crews to use hazmat materials and containment pools to prevent the acidic sauce from entering nearby drains and waterways.
