CBS Detroit reported that the two Democrats held a roundtable at Birth Detroit, with the panel focused on Black maternal health. During the discussion, one of the panel’s hosts, Paula Thornton Greear, spoke about the importance of electing El-Sayed for Black women’s maternal health. In her remarks, she used the term “Black birthing people.” She said:
“That’s what the people in Michigan need from you [Abdul El-Sayed]. From our leaders, that’s what Black women and Black birthing people need in order to move themselves forward, their families forward, their communities forward, the state forward, and this country forward.”
A clip of the press conference was shared by popular conservative X user @EndWokeness. This caught the attention of U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who reacted to the comments, saying:
“‘Black birthing people.’ These lunatics are not normal. They cannot even say the word “Mom.””

Harris said El-Sayed is the ideal candidate on this issue. She also shared her experience as a senator and spoke about the importance of raising awareness on the issue. She said:
“I’m here to support Dr. El-Sayed. Because on this subject, I know he will be a champion. I’ve been a United States Senator on this issue. I have walked the halls of the United States Congress attempting to, and with good success, especially with the partnership of many of my colleagues of highlighting this issue. Bringing it to the awareness and consciousness of people who otherwise aren’t thinking about it but have a very significant role to play.”
