At the start of a playthrough of Phantom Blade Zero, players get access to four starter weapons: Sanguine, Sanguine Twin, Sanguine Reach, and Wooden Sanguine. While players can swap between these weapons at any time, resources are limited, and they only have enough resources to upgrade one weapon at a time. The upgrades can be refunded for free before level 10, but figuring out the strengths and weaknesses of a weapon is a time-consuming task nonetheless.

Sanguine Twin
The Sanguine Twin has the fastest moveset among all Sanguine weapons, which makes it perfect for dealing extra damage during stun windows and weaving in and out of combat. In the early game (Chapter 1), you’ll only be able to upgrade the Sanguine Twin to level 5, at which point you’ll unlock the Chi-Infused Blade ability, allowing you to infuse chi into the weapon for 20 seconds to deal extra damage per hit.
Another great thing about the Sanguine Twin is that, since it is a Dual-Wield weapon, it uses the Twinned Metal as upgrade material. Most other weapons in the early game rely on Forged Metal for their upgrades, which makes the Sanguine Twin perfect as a secondary option.
Wooden Sanguine
The Wooden Sanguine seems like a meme weapon at first glance. It has the lowest base damage among all the Sanguine weapons and doesn’t seem to have any special abilities or moves like the other options. However, that’s only on the surface.
The Wooden Sanguine’s level 5 upgrade “a parry depletes more of the enemy’s Sha–Chi” makes all parries twice as effective at draining enemy Sha-Chi. When the Sha-Chi meter is fully drained, the enemy enters a stunned state. For regular mobs, this ability doesn’t really come into play that often since you can mostly button spam them to death, even on Hellwalker difficulty. However, against bosses, this ability makes the Wooden Sanguine the ultimate stun-locking weapon, at least in the early game.
B-Tier
Sanguine
The Sanguine is the most balanced among the early game weapons. It has a relatively fast moveset, decent damage, and good abilities. While it certainly isn’t as flashy as some of the other options, it gets the job done against all types of enemies, making it the best fallback if other weapons’ gimmicks aren’t working against a particular enemy.
When you’re starting out, don’t hesitate to upgrade the Sanguine as much as possible if it’s your current main weapon. Weapon upgrades can be refunded for free before you hit upgrade level 10.
C-Tier
Sanguine Reach
The Sanguine Reach is the slowest Sanguine weapon out of all of them, which is the main reason why it is considered the hardest-to-use option in the early game. The basic attack combo in particular has a large wind-up animation if you start from a standstill. Often, this delay results in you taking a hit that you otherwise wouldn’t have if you had been using a faster weapon.
That said, if you learn the Sanguine Reach’s moveset and learn to take advantage of its longer reach, it functions just as well, if not better than the other options. Just be aware that there will be a learning curve before you reach that point.
