A man dressed as Batman chased a suspected handbag thief through Norwich before climbing a wall to recover the bag for its owner.
Sonni Mason, 25, was out for a friend’s birthday on September 19 when he saw a woman’s bag taken after an argument outside a nightclub.
“Someone swiped someone’s bag over a pack of cigarettes out of spite,” he explained.
Still wearing his Batman costume, he ran after the suspect alongside friends dressed as Poison Ivy and Mister Fantastic.

The group flagged down police officers during the chase. When they caught up with the suspected thief, however, he no longer had the bag.
A tip led the group to a wall near Norwich Cathedral, roughly 300 metres from where the bag had been taken.
Attempts to reach it with a makeshift grappling hook made out of a roll of toilet paper failed, so Mason climbed the wall and retrieved it himself.
The handbag was returned to its owner with everything still inside. Norfolk Police confirmed that officers had helped locate a missing bag on September 19 and that its contents were intact. Mason shared footage of the incident on TikTok.
“I didn’t expect to be scaling up a wall,” Mason remarked. He said he hoped the story would encourage others to help people who need it, costume or otherwise.
“I just hope more people will be inspired to do the same if they see someone being mugged or feeling uncomfortable on a night out. It shouldn’t take a superhero costume to make you want to do that.”
Meanwhile, the authorities didn’t give the caped crusader much credit. “Officers on routine night-time economy patrols in Norwich were approached by a member of the public, on Saturday, September 19, who requested help to find a missing bag,” a Norfolk Police spokesperson said.

It is not the first time a Batman outfit has appeared in a real-world crime story. London police dressed as Batman and Robin to catch suspects running an illegal gambling operation, while authorities in Mexico investigated attacks attributed online to a vigilante dubbed the “Batman of Lagos.”
A study also found that passengers were more likely to offer a pregnant woman their seat when someone dressed as Batman boarded their train.
The costumes do not always come with heroic behaviour, though: last year, a man dressed as Spider-Man was arrested after stealing $10,000 worth of trading cards from a Virginia store.
