The Guardian recently reported that several members of Congress had received envelopes containing white powder. It was revealed that more than 100 letters thought to contain the substance were in the mail system. Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
AOC recently shared her thoughts on the matter. She said she was grateful to law enforcement for responding quickly and ensuring the safety of her staff. She wrote:
“Today, my Hunts Point District Office received a suspicious letter consistent with those received by dozens of elected officials across the country. I am grateful to local and federal law enforcement who quickly responded to investigate the matter and worked to ensure the safety of my staff.”
Ocasio-Cortez noted that the mailings began two weeks before the midterm election and seemed intended to “intimidate public servants.” Calling it “political violence,” she stressed the importance of refusing to normalize such behavior. She wrote:
“This string of suspicious mailings started two weeks before a consequential midterm election and is seemingly intended to intimidate public servants and sow further division. Political violence has no place in our country. It is always unacceptable, and we must all refuse to normalize an unsafe and volatile political environment where everyday people are put at risk.”
