Gov. Gavin Newsom responds to Donald Trump, urging voters to vote in the midterms while pretending he’s running.

On October 1, 2026, President Donald Trump held a rally in Durant, Oklahoma, where he spoke about the upcoming midterm elections. In his speech, he urged voters to vote as if he were running. He also said that if Republican candidates end up losing, he could be impeached. Trump noted that GOP turnout is “great” when he’s on the ballot, but not otherwise. He said:
“In this election… We do great when I’m on the ballot. When I’m not on the ballot, people don’t go and vote so much. Pretend I’m running, please, just pretend. Because I am in the ballot. And if we don’t win, they’ll end up impeaching me.”
A clip of the broadcast was shared by popular X user @RpsAgainstTrump. Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom responded to Trump, urging voters to pretend as if he’s on the ballot. He wrote:
“Please vote like Donald Trump is running.”
Gov. Newsom has called out the president on multiple occasions on his X account. He recently accused Trump of corruption and selling access to the White House.
Donald Trump Claims He’ll Offer $5,000 to Every Citizen if Republicans Win the Midterms

In a recent X post, Donald Trump said he would offer $5,000 if Republicans win the midterms. He claimed Democratic candidates would prevent this from happening and accused them of raising taxes. Claiming they’ll destroy the economy, the president had this to say:
“Our country is doing so well under Republican leadership that only I can make you this promise. If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I’m going to give all the adult citizens in the United States of America $5,000…. Democrat policies won’t allow this to happen. In fact, the opposite is going to take place. They’re going to raise your taxes, and they’re gonna destroy our country and certainly destroy our economy. It will be a 1929 disaster if they get in… If the Republicans win, you’ll each have $5,000 in your pocket and economic success for our country like we have never ever seen before.”
