Netflix faced boycott threats over a “neck injury” post made on Charlie Kirk’s death anniversary, but the company denied any reference.

The Netflix UK & Ireland X account faced immense backlash on the platform after making a “neck injury” post, sharing a snapshot of “The Gentlemen.” The post featured Theo James in his character of Eddie Horniman straining his neck to look back at the camera. The post had the caption,
“Nearly did himself a neck injury.”
However, the post was made on September 10, exactly a year after the brutal assassination of Charlie Kirk. Many X users seemed to note the caption and believe that it was a direct dig at Charlie Kirk’s assassination, since the political activist also passed away after being shot brutally in the neck. This led to immense backlash online, with many users claiming that they would be cancelling their Netflix subscription because of the insensitive joke.
Turning Point USA founder, Charlie Kirk, passed away on September 10, 2025, after he was brutally shot in the neck while delivering a peaceful speech at the Utah Valley University. A year after the incident, people are still quite fired up about the assassination and diligently want to protect Kirk’s honor.
Netflix denies claims of reference to Charlie Kirk’s assassination in recent X post
While the X community rose in uproar against the post made by the Netflix UK & Ireland account, the streaming giant claimed that there was no reference to Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Instead, it was a nod at an integral plot point in “The Gentlemen.” The official statement read,
“This post directly references a plot point from our U.K. series, ‘The Gentlemen,’ which launched its second season on Sept. 3. Suggestions that it has any link to sensitive real world events are inaccurate and ludicrous”
Season 2 of “The Gentlemen” recently launched on Netflix, on September 3, and features Theo James and Kaya Scodelario in integral roles.
