Mortal Shell 2: Magdalena Boss Fight Guide

Magdalena, otherwise known as the Lady of the Woods, is a simple but infuriating boss in Mortal Shell 2. Her attacks are predictable, telegraphed, and limited in variety, but when they connect, they spell a whole world of trouble for players. If you want to beat Magdalena in Mortal Shell 2, parry less and dodge more, and approach the fight calmly so you don’t miss any opportunities to punish the boss’ mistakes.

Magdalena is at the end of the Glutted Mire map. You’ll find her just past the Shepherd boss and the chest where you get the Etching Needles for upgrading Tarstones. Magdalena’s arena is a short run away from the nearest Beacon, but the path is completely clear of enemies (save for some sheep that you can slaughter for Gloom and Gold).

Before you jump down into Magdalena’s mire, you can spend a Glimpse to permanently unlock Smert as a friendly phantom who will help you in the boss fight. He’s not very durable, nor does he do much damage, but he’ll get the boss’ attention and give you some breathing space.

Magdalena Boss Fight Tactics

  • Bait and punish her charge attack
  • Hit her as she’s winding down from her spinning flamethrower attack
  • Use a weapon with good range, like the Iconoclast or the Veteran’s Axe

In my experience, playing carefully is the best way to beat Magdalena. Almost all of her attacks are unblockable, and if you stay close to her for too long, she’ll hit you with a very fast ram attack with her mobility scooter. In most cases, you’ll only have time to hit her with one or two light attacks before she starts counter-attacking.

If you hit Magdalena enough times, you’ll instantly fill her Break meter, opening her up to a Riposte. As long as you keep some decent pressure against her, you’ll be able to deal some big damage to Magdalena without having to slowly build up Break using other means.

Once her health drops to ~50%, she’ll summon some swamp demon babies to swarm you. They die very quickly, but there’s a lot of them, so you’ll want to use area attacks like the horizontal sweeps from the Iconoclast and Veteran’s Battle Axe, or the sprinting spin or charged heavy attack from the Axe & Dagger. Magdalena is completely exposed during this phase, so make sure you’re targeting her and letting your wide attacks deal with the chaff.

At around ~30% health, Magdalena will start belching flies, which will cover her immediate area. If you stay in the fly swarm for too long, you’ll get locked in an animation, giving the boss time to hit you with a strong blast. To avoid this, just bait her somewhere else.

Defeating Magdalena rewards you with Magdalena’s Memento, a Tarstone that unlocks a special jump-spin attack exclusively for the Axe & Dagger. A Beacon filled with a large quantity of Ova will also appear. Take them all back to Marrow Keep to get a big batch of Gloom.
