On September 4, 2026, YouTuber Nick Shirley shared a video on his social media platforms claiming that he is suing the state of California. In the nearly 11-minute video, he discussed Governor Gavin Newsom signing a bill that is referred to as the “Stop Nick Shirley Act.” The bill helps eligible immigration support service providers in California’s Safe at Home program, which allows qualifying people to keep their addresses confidential in public records.
Shirley argues that this could prohibit journalists from obtaining information about said immigration support service providers. He posted his video on X, with the caption:
“I’m suing California… California has decided to push for less transparency and create laws that penalize citizens and journalists for looking into potential fraud inside “immigration support services providers.” A written demand is all it takes to stop the publishing of a video in California. Enough is enough.”
In his video, Shirley explained the reason why he is filing his lawsuit, stating:
“This law will prohibit what an individual or a journalist will be able to film and publish when it comes to immigration support service providers. Now, in a world where we all want more transparency and not less, it is more critical than ever that we do not just sit back and do nothing; that is why I’m filing this lawsuit against the state of California. Because why would they create a law that pushes for less transparency when all we want is more transparency, especially when it comes to our tax dollars being defrauded?”

At the three-minute mark of the video, YouTuber Nick Shirley explained the “Stop Nick Shirley Act,” which was introduced by Assembly member Mia Bonta and later signed by Governor Gavin Newsom. He also gave an example from one of his previous videos, titled I Investigated California’s Billion Dollar Fraud Crisis. He said:
“It was created because these people inside these immigration support service providers have allegedly faced doxing, courthouse targeting, online harassment, anti-immigrant vigilante threats…. They’re now saying that these individuals who work inside these immigration support service providers need to be protected and that their personal image or personal information cannot be shared.”
Shirley then discussed a video in which he visited a hospice. During his visit, he filmed a man who told him that he could not record him. He showed pictures of the man in the video. The YouTuber used the video as an example of how he believes the “Stop Nick Shirley Act” could affect journalists. He said:
“In Van Nuys, California, one-third of Americans on hospice were going there to die. I go and film this hospice and this man right here says, ‘Hey Nick, you cannot publish this video, I’m actually a part of this program’ and gives me a written demand. I therefore cannot publish the video…. and if I do, I then get a $4,000 fine potentially.”
