FPS Characters Stronger Than Halo’s Master Chief, Ranked

Halo‘s Master Chief is hands-down one of the most recognizable characters in FPS history, at least in my book. If you don’t know who he is, congratulations, you’ve been living under a rock. Master Chief is a genetically enhanced super soldier who has survived battles against some pretty terrifying enemies, to say the least.

His strength is more than impressive, and his armor has no equal when it comes to resisting attacks. However, just because he’s powerful doesn’t mean that he is the strongest character in the entire FPS genre. In fact, there are a few FPS protagonists who could potentially take Master Chief down in a fight, and some of them wouldn’t even have to break a sweat.

Destiny 2 – The Guardian

Even Death Can’t Stop Him

If you’re a fan of science fiction, you will definitely love Destiny 2, especially once you get to see the sheer power of the Guardian who’s ready to face any alien threat. He is a warrior empowered by the Traveler, a mysterious cosmic entity associated with the Light. Unlike Master Chief, he possesses supernatural abilities that exceed the power of any conventional military equipment.

Depending on their class and subclass, Guardians are able to wield not one, but several supernatural powers that could give them an advantage over Master Chief. To give an example, Stasis could freeze him in place, and Strand could suspend him midair, while Solar and Arc could allow the Guardian to unleash devastating elemental attacks that his energy shield wouldn’t be able to withstand. Sure, Master Chief is extremely durable, but his physical enhancement skills would not be very useful against an enemy that has so many ways of restricting his movement and freezing his attacks.

However, perhaps the biggest advantage the Guardians have is the so-called Ghost that can resurrect them if they die, which is a significant boost no matter what enemy you’re fighting. Last, but not least, the Guardian has a history of defeating some tough enemies, including the powerful Hive gods and the Witness. The latter is a cosmic antagonist threatening to end existence itself, so if beating that isn’t a good track record, I’m not sure what is.

DOOM Eternal – Doom Slayer

The Warrior Who Defeats Hell’s Worst Monsters

As we all probably know, the Doom Slayer is more than an ordinary soldier; he’s a powerful warrior fighting to stop demonic forces from conquering Earth. Talk about a stressful job. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, and endurance, which is a very big part of why he made this list, obviously. However, his arsenal is no less impressive, as it includes some powerful close-range weapons such as the Super Shotgun and Crucible Blade that can kill nearby enemies almost instantly. The Doom Slayer’s greatest achievement, though, lies elsewhere. In DOOM Eternal, he defeats the Icon of Sin.

If you don’t know what that is, you’re lucky you haven’t met it. It’s basically a gigantic demon capable of destroying entire worlds. Master Chief might be an exceptional Spartan, but the Doom Slayer has demonstrated extreme physical resilience and capabilities far beyond what even an enhanced soldier can accomplish. Besides, we shouldn’t forget the Doom Slayer’s ability to replenish his health and armor by killing his enemies. Yeah, Master Chief is done for.

Metroid Prime – Samus Aran

Advanced Chozo Technology Gives Her An Edge

Samus Aran is an intergalactic bounty hunter. She investigates alien threats, and in Metroid Prime specifically, she undertakes the task of exploring the planet Tallon 4. Samus possesses Chozo DNA and wears an extraordinarily advanced Power Suit that enhances her abilities. By using her Arm Cannon, she can fire energy beams and missiles, which gives her plenty of ways to attack Master Chief from a distance.

Moreover, her Ice Beam can freeze enemies, which means they remain completely defenseless against her. The Wave Beam, on the other hand, fires electrical energy that could put pressure on Master Chief’s shields. I guess the most impressive aspect for me personally is the fact that, thanks to the Morph Ball, she can squeeze into any space and evade incoming attacks. This is all before I even mention the Screw Attack that she uses in later Metroid Prime games.

No matter how impressive Master Chief’s armor and reflexes are, there’s simply no way for him to compete with Samus Aran’s weapons and superhuman mobility. Even if he manages to withstand her energy attacks, it would still be impossible to keep up with her constantly charging shots. I almost feel bad for the Spartan.

Dishonored – Corvo Attano

A Force To Be Reckoned With

Corvo Attano is the star of Dishonored. This first-person action game is one of the best examples of stealth combined with supernatural powers. Master Chief might have access to advanced military technology and enhanced physical strength on his side, but the supernatural abilities that Corvo Attano uses would give him a significant advantage.

I know what you’re thinking. This list is all about supernatural powers versus a guy who is just genetically enhanced. Not exactly a fair comparison, I know, but Master Chief is hardly an ordinary human himself, and he could hold his own against Corvo Attano, at least for a while. However, even though his shields could help him at the beginning, I think once Corvo starts using Blink to teleport around the battlefield, Master Chief will simply not be able to follow and anticipate his movements.

However, even if Master Chief managed by some miracle to predict Corvo’s movements, Corvo could just use Bend Time to slow down or stop time, which would allow him to approach Master Chief in any way he wants. Sure, this doesn’t mean he’ll be able to penetrate his opponent’s armor, but it would definitely allow him to target some vulnerable areas and, given enough time, eventually finish him off.

Serious Sam – Sam Serious Stone

A One-Man Army With Serious Firepower

Serious Sam was probably the first FPS franchise I ever got into, and it still remains one of my absolute favorite titles. In any case, it’s hard not to be impressed by Sam’s ability to defeat enormous hordes of extraterrestrial enemies. Unlike the other characters I’ve included on this list, Sam doesn’t really rely on supernatural powers, which could result in a more even fight between him and Master Chief.

It’s important to mention that Sam’s arsenal of weapons is just insanely impressive. Apart from all his standard weapons, Sam also carries miniguns, rocket launchers, laser weapons, and a giant cannon that fires iron projectiles. If I were Master Chief, I’d make a run for it. Despite the fact that Master Chief is nowhere near defenseless, Sam could potentially overwhelm his shields with sustained fire from his heavier weapons. In a world where Sam defeats multiple enormous monsters simultaneously, Master Chief just doesn’t stand a chance.
