J.K. Rowling responds to a Finnish study that reports an alleged sharp rise in psychiatric illness following sex-alteration procedures.
On September 20, 2026, J.K. Rowling reacted to a report alleging a rise in psychiatric illness among adolescents who had undergone sex-alteration procedures. The day before, @k_mahlburg posted on X about a Finnish study conducted months earlier, which examined every young person under 23 who had contacted Finland’s gender clinics between 1996 and 2019. The research reportedly found a sharp rise in “psychiatric morbidity” among people who had received gender-affirming care. In the long X post, he wrote:
“The numbers: psychiatric morbidity rose from 9.8% to 60.7% in adolescents who underwent feminising reassignment, and from 21.6% to 54.5% in masculinising reassignment. Even after adjusting for prior psychiatric history, gender-referred adolescents faced five times the risk of male population controls, and three times the risk of female controls.”
British author J.K. Rowling shared her thoughts on the study. In her reply, she called out ‘arrogant celebrities’ who supposedly claim that children who are denied gender-affirming care will “kill themselves.” She wrote:
“Every glib, arrogant, virtue-signalling celebrity who’s broadcast the lie that kids will kill themselves if not allowed to transition deserves to have this read aloud to them non-stop through a megaphone for a year.”

Rowling’s view on gender-affirming care, seemingly taking aim at celebrities who they claim jump on the bandwagon of supporting gender transition among young people. The Harry Potter author responded, claiming that these figures “peddled dangerous lies to minors.” She wrote:
“The lack of moral courage that drove them onto the bandwagon will prevent most of them from admitting they f***** up, but those with young fan bases in particular should never be allowed to forget that they willingly peddled dangerous lies to minors.”
