The pop artist finally broke his silence regarding the Macklemore controversy. For context, Macklemore was removed from Sheeran’s concert after making pro-Palestinian comments on stage at MetLife Stadium. The blowback was massive, and several artists dropped out of the British star’s concert in support of Palestine. Sheeran remained at the forefront of the backlash.
At his recent concert, the Shape of You singer addressed the matter. He acknowledged that he is used to criticism of his music. However, Sheeran stated that the recent backlash “was about something much more important.” The British singer apologized for “making mistakes,” stating:
“Before I play some songs tonight, I hope it’s okay if I say a few words about this last week. I’m used to my music being criticized, and I’m always happy to take that because I’m lucky…. You know, it’s normal. But this week, the criticism was about something much more important, and I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so so sorry.”
Sheeran stated that he has never wanted to be an “activist musician.” He noted that the recent controversy regarding Macklemore has landed him in the “most complex political issue on the planet.” The Thinking Out Loud singer also acknowledged that certain venues around the world pre-approve “content for performance.” The comment came in light of Macklemore’s removal from his concert. Saying it should “never happen in the free world,” he said:
“I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician. But this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet…. I am deeply worried about the idea that venues should pre-approve content for performance. This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world.”
Ed Sheeran Speaks Out Regarding The Israel-Palestine Conflict
In his speech at the concert, Sheeran shared his thoughts on where he stands in the Israel-Palestine conflict. He spoke about the October 7 attacks carried out by Hamas militants at the Supernova Sukkot Gathering music festival near the Gaza border. The British singer also spoke about Israel’s bombing campaign in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with the death toll rising each day. Furthermore, stating that his “heart has been broken by the scale of devastation,” he said:
“I have tried in my career not to be a political commentator of any kind, because I want my music and shows to be about unity, not division…. But this is a humanitarian issue, and I cannot hide how I feel about it anymore. What happened in Israel and at the Nova Museum Festival on October 7th was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable, and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives, and the systemic injustice we’re seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”
