Hunter x Hunter is a phenomenal series created in 1998 by legendary mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi. The story of HxH has taken off since then, and while the manga remains the main source material, it has also received new adaptations, bringing Gon’s story to life in new mediums. The most popular Hunter x Hunter adaptation is the 2011 anime adaptation, but it also has an anime from 1999. Now, Hunter X Hunter is officially getting a new Stage Play, re-telling the story in a new and fresh way.
Hunter x Hunter: The Stage released its Part 3 in 2025. It’s finally returning once more with a new Part, covering the events of the Chimera Ant arc. Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Part 4 is officially releasing in two parts, one in January 2027 and the second in July 2027.
Hunter x Hunter Returns with New Chimera Ant Stage Play
Hunter x Hunter is one of the most beloved series out there. Originally, it was created by Yoshihiro Togashi, who is also known for his previous story, Yu Yu Hakusho, for Weekly Shonen Jump. Hunter x Hunter began serialization on March 2, 1998, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #14. Even today, the manga is still ongoing, but it has slowed down significantly due to hiatuses, stemming from the health issues Togashi faces. Throughout Togashi’s legendary Hunter x Hunter series, one arc that is praised consistently for being a masterpiece and the peak of the story is the Chimera Ant Arc.
The Chimera Ant arc features quite a unique story and sees the Hunter Association take on a calamity from the Dark Continent. In the manga, it was serialized between Chapter 186 and Chapter 318. The original 1999 anime never adapted this arc, but it would be brought to life in the 2011 anime from episodes 76 to 136.
Now, this Chimera Ant arc is getting a brand new adaptation. It was officially confirmed on September 3, 2026, that the Hunter x Hunter stage play is expanding and adding the story’s fan-favorite arc. The Hunter x Hunter Stage Play sees the story of Gon brought to life through actors on stage, and, as seen with previously adapted arcs, it runs for a limited amount of time, making it a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans. With the confirmed work on the Chimera Ant arc for the Stage Play, we will soon see the casting of actors to play new characters with big roles. We’re especially curious to see the actors behind the main antagonists, notably Meruem, Pitou, Pouf, and Youpi.
New Stage Sequel To Be Performed In January 2027 and July 2027
Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play is a rather recent addition to the HxH IP, but it has nevertheless been running for a few years now. The first installment of Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play saw its debut on May 12, 2023. This first installment showed us the adaptation of the very first parts of HxH and introduced new exciting content for fans to look forward to. So far, Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play has three installments, with it returning almost every year to adapt new arcs. In 2026, however, the show won’t return. The fourth part of Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play, which covers the Chimera Ant Arc, will instead be released in 2027.
It has been announced that, like previous installments, Part 4 will be split into two courses. Thus, fans can catch Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play Part 4 starting January 2027. The second part will make its debut in July 2027. The exact release date remains to be determined. When it comes to the end date of each of these runs, we don’t have any information yet, but based on its predecessors, each run will likely only be around 2 weeks, so fans interested should make sure to snatch their tickets in the future when they go on sale.
It must be mentioned, however, that the Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play is not a global event. It is exclusively in Japan, and there are no indications of it ever expanding in the near future for worldwide audiences. Big fans of Hunter x Hunter will have to hit either Tokyo or Osaka to have a chance to see this show in person.
Other Japanese cities could also have a few events for the Stage Play. Exact locations and theaters participating in those cities have also yet to be determined. With a January 2027 debut date, however, new information should be coming out in upcoming months. One thing we can say with certainty is that we will see the return of some iconic actors to take up their roles once more. Nishiyama Rento is set to return as Gon once more, and Nichika Akutsu will continue the role of Killua.
Hunter x Hunter Holds Even More Surprises in 2027
Hunter x Hunter: The Stage Play is, unfortunately, a rather limited event. Only fans in Japan will be able to witness it. What’s worse, for international fans able to attend, it will be rather disappointing, as it is an event in Japanese, making it hard for them to get the full experience. Because of all of that, fans are more eager for more manga or anime content. As far as the manga goes, Togashi recently returned to Weekly Shonen Jump. On June 28, 2026, Togashi finally released, after a year and a half, Chapter 411 in WSJ Issue #31. Sadly, this return was, as usual, short-lived. Togashi went on a break again after Chapter 420, which was released on September 8, 2026, in WSJ Issue #41. However, it must be said that the HxH manga could still return before the Stage Play even begins. Togashi is in the process of finishing 10 more chapters, which makes HxH’s return possible later on this year.
In regards to the anime, nothing has been confirmed yet. It must be noted, though, that HxH has been advertised like never before recently. Fans believe new HxH anime content could be planned, which could include the adaptation of the Succession Contest arc, or the remake of the whole show after over 10 years. Either way, we’re all eager for any new HxH content and can’t wait to see what Togashi and Shueisha have in store for this legendary IP.
