On October 21, 2026, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reacted to the Albanian protests. The “Flamingo Revolution,” which began in May, saw Albanian citizens demonstrate against a luxury resort planned for the coastline. The project reportedly involved Jared Kushner as an investor. The protests have since escalated over a different cause, as students in Albania took to the streets to oppose rising tuition fees and infrastructure problems.

They are also demanding that Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama resign, but he has refused. AOC shared her thoughts on the matter. She said she had received outreach from Albanian community members who were worried about their families’ safety. Ocasio-Cortez then called on the government of the European country to “de-escalate the violent repression” of protestors and to respect their freedom of expression. She wrote:

“Over the last week, I have received outreach from Albanian community members who are worried about their families’ safety. I am calling on the Albanian government to de-escalate the violent repression of protestors and respect Albanians’ freedom of expression.”

Reports also suggest that police have used brutality when detaining protestors, some of whom are minors. Police have reportedly used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.

Aside from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, fellow U.S. Representative Joe Wilson recently shared his thoughts on the Albanian protests. He stated that citizens deserve freedom and have the right to protest. He also urged the government not to use violence against the students, who deserve a voice in shaping their own future. On X, he wrote:

“I am watching with great concern the escalating crisis in NATO Ally Albania. The Albanian people deserve freedom, rule of law, and institutional accountability. The government must refrain from all violence against protestors. Young people deserve a voice in the future of their country.”
