CEO of Flock Safety, Garrett Langley, has called for a national “compromise” between privacy and public safety as the company faces growing backlash over its automated license plate cameras. The comments came during an interview with Fox News amid reports of protests, vandalism and calls for greater oversight of the technology.
Flock cameras are automated license plate readers that capture images of passing vehicles and their plates. The data can then be stored and accessed by law enforcement agencies for criminal investigations.
Flock CEO Calls for Balance Between Privacy and Safety
Speaking to Fox News, Langley defended the technology while acknowledging concerns from Americans who do not want their movements tracked.
“When people talk about just one of these, privacy or safety, they’re prioritizing the wrong thing, and what we have to prioritize as a country is compromise”
He added that the discussion should focus on finding a balance between public safety and privacy.
The debate has intensified as residents and activists have protested the cameras, while some cameras have reportedly been vandalized or stolen in several states. The issue has also reached Capitol Hill, with lawmakers proposing restrictions or changes to how the technology is used.
Langley said Flock has been involved in more than a million law enforcement investigations and helped locate more than 10,000 missing people. He also argued that stronger regulation and accountability are needed to prevent misuse of the technology.
