Former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij believes the raft of GTA 6 leaks is a “nothing burger” and even story spoilers won’t put fans off from playing the game.
Back on August 18, leaker Cyberleek started uploading videos of gameplay from Grand Theft Auto 6. Unlike the 2022 leaks, which saw testing footage surface, these leaks appear to be from much more recent builds, with songs from 2025 playing on the radio.
These leaks have continued for several days, with Cyberleek even taunting Rockstar in a few of them, and claiming to have more videos in the pipeline. The leaker stated that they’re publishing the leaks in protest of digital pre-orders, “fake” single-player DLC, and to keep game ownership in the hands of players.
The videos have only served to create more hype for some fans, especially as an official look is coming on August 27. Former Rockstar Games dev Obbe Vermeij also believes the leaks won’t have any effect on the game.
Former GTA dev responds to ongoing GTA 6 leaks
“Calm down everybody. The leaks are a nothing burger,” the former Rockstar Games technical director posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“As a marketing strategy, R* is trying to keep the game under wraps longer than other publishers. All that has happened is that some footage has escaped. Slightly ahead of the Netflix thing next week. 90% of future players don’t spend their time on the internet looking for video snippets. They don’t have the time and don’t want spoilers.”
Vermeij admitted that the devs are probably “a little annoyed” but it won’t compare to the “nightmare” Rockstar had with the infamous Hot Coffee leaks around San Andreas.
He added that the leaks are a “tiny blip” and the game will still be “phenomenal” for years to come.
Vermeij also said it would “suck” if the storyline was leaked, but people will still want to play GTA 6 regardless.
There have been similar messages from the likes of xQc, who called the leaker a “b*tch” and said that real fans don’t have any interest in watching the videos.
As it stands, Rockstar is still going ahead with the extended look, but there have been reports that they are “furious” with the leaks. They have not issued any public statements to this point, but have struck down the majority of clips.
Take-Two has also issued a raft of subpoenas in an attempt to identify the leaker.
