Elon Musk criticizes mainstream media coverage, claiming legacy outlets operate on a far-left agenda and mislabel everyday views as far-right.
Elon Musk has once again criticized mainstream media coverage, this time taking aim at how news outlets use political labels such as “far right” and “far left.”
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO made the comments on September 6, 2026, after U.S. Senator Mike Lee questioned the way legacy media describes political movements.
Lee had shared a BRICS News post on X covering Germany’s AfD winning the election in Saxony-Anhalt. The post described the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, as a far-right party and said its victory marked the first time a far-right party had taken power at the state level in Germany since World War II.
Reacting to the post, Lee questioned why the term “far right” appears so often in mainstream media coverage while “far left” is used less frequently:
“Does the legacy media ever use the term ‘far left’?”
Musk then shared Lee’s post and offered his own view on the issue:
“They never do, because the legacy media IS far left! That is why they view normalcy as the far right.”
Musk has been a frequent critic of legacy media, particularly since becoming more involved in political commentary. The billionaire has repeatedly accused traditional news outlets of shaping public opinion through what he sees as misleading coverage.
Musk made a similar argument in May 2025 during an appearance on CNBC’s Power Lunch. While speaking about the growing criticism he faced after entering the political arena, Musk attributed much of the backlash to what he described as propaganda coming from legacy media:
“Well, I mean, unfortunately, what I’ve learned is that legacy media propaganda is very effective at making people believe things that aren’t true.”
During the interview, CNBC reporter David Faber asked Musk to provide an example of what he meant. Musk pointed to the controversy over a gesture he made on Inauguration Day, which drew comparisons to a Nazi salute:
“That I’m a Nazi, for example, and how many legacy media publications, talk shows, whatever, try to claim that I was a Nazi because of some random hand gesture at a rally where all I said was that my heart goes out to you. I was talking about space travel, and yet the legacy media promoted that as though that was a deliberate Nazi gesture, when in fact, every politician, any public speaker who’s spoken for any length of time, has made the exact same gesture.”
His comments have since become part of his broader criticism of traditional media. Musk has repeatedly argued that major news organizations can present events in ways that shape public perception rather than simply reporting what happened.
