At the core of the Dragon Ball franchise are four main Saiyans: Goku, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Gohan. Of the quarter, Dragon Ball Super is perhaps the cruelest to Gohan. He loses access to his Ultimate form, is reduced to fodder who can’t keep up with his father, and is a main character in less than half of the series’ story arcs. Being a Gohan fan got depressing real fast while Dragon Ball Super 1 was airing, but Dragon Ball Super: Beerus looks like it’s ready to make amends.
On top of treating Gohan with a bit more respect in one episode than he got at any point in the original Beerus Saga, Dragon Ball Super has given the Hybrid Saiyan a fresh new redesign. Adult Gohan looks better than ever in one of the last major redesigns Akira Toriyama gave him before his final design in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Gohan won’t have much to do in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, but based on the first look at his redesign, he’s going to look great the few takes he takes control of the narrative.
Adult Gohan’s Most Underrated Design Has Finally Been Done Justice
Part of what made Resurrection F so exciting when it originally came out was the fact that we finally got major redesigns for multiple characters. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Tien (of all characters) all got fresh new outfits for the first time in years. Goku and Vegeta’s Resurrection F uniforms still stand out as some of their best designs in the series. The same can’t be said for Gohan, but that’s mainly because the original movie’s art direction failed to do the tracksuit justice.
Artistically, the tracksuit is a genius outfit for Gohan – he’s strong and likes working out, but far more casually than Goku or Vegeta. It makes sense he’d wear laxer sportswear. The green also makes him stand out against Goku and Vegeta, while giving him his own main color to contrast Goku’s red/orange and Vegeta’s blue. Gohan’s redesign appears in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus opening and he looks quite striking. His hair style doesn’t look nearly as dorky, he has some real muscle on his body, and his eyes still maintain the spark he lost in the original anime – all around, it’s a huge improvement over the design’s first iteration.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus Has a Chance to Fix Gohan’s Reputation
Dragon Ball Super made it hard to root for Gohan, but Dragon Ball Super: Beerus can fix things quite a bit. For starters, cutting the filler from the Golden Frieza Saga will naturally result in Gohan coming off less pathetic – especially with the enhanced animation and art direction punching up his battle against Final Form Frieza. Since the remake is following Toriyama’s notes, however, this does mean Gohan won’t have anything to do in the Universe 6 Tournament.
Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol won’t give Gohan much focus either, but with rumors of the Goku Black Saga and Tournament of Power remakes being far more hands-on than the first three Sagas, Season 2 of Dragon Ball Super: Beerus could potentially weave Gohan into the Goku Black Saga or animate his fight with Kefla from the manga’s Universe Survival Saga. One way or another, all paths lead down to Gohan unlocking Beast, becoming the series’ strongest Z-Fighter again, and crowning himself the protagonist.
