During the events of Dragon Ball Z, Super Saiyans hadn’t been seen in so long that they had become merely a legend. Frieza feared them, Vegeta wanted to be one, but no one knew what a Super Saiyan actually looked like. In fact, most of the Frieza Saga treats Super Saiyan like a concept or idea. The fact that it’s a full-blown transformation for Goku is actually a pretty big twist, especially relative to Frieza’s many transformations.
From there, the legendary Super Saiyan would go from referring to Goku’s prophesied battle against Frieza to a literal transformation: a form so strong and unique, only one person in each universe can wield it. The most powerful Legendary Super Saiyans in Dragon Ball are warriors unlike any other, capable of fighting non-stop while growing stronger with every blow. Frieza had every right to fear the Saiyans.

Yamoshi Was the Original Legendary Super Saiyan
Very little is actually known about Yamoshi, and even the information Dragon Ball gives us is disputed. Depending on the continuity, Yamoshi is either the original Super Saiyan, original Super Saiyan God, original Legendary Super Saiyan, or some variation of all three. All that’s really set in stone is that Yamoshi was an Ancient Saiyan who could not keep his transformation active long enough to survive his final battle.
Power-wise, Yamoshi had to be strong enough to establish the legend of the Super Saiyan, but weak enough where he could be killed by his fellow Saiyans in his base form. Granted, Ancient Saiyans are stronger than modern Saiyans, but not quite to the level of the main cast at the end of Dragon Ball Z. Yamoshi’s really not that impressive compared to where the Z-Fighters are today.

Bio-Broly is the Only Artificial Legendary Super Saiyan (& A Joke)
Bio-Broly is widely considered to be one of the worst villains in the franchise, and it’s not hard to see why. Even among Dragon Ball Z movie villains, he is a vessel that exists purely for action – he does not have a personality, no discernible motivation, and his once pristine design has been ruined by sludge.
Power-wise, Bio-Broly is outright weaker than the real Legendary Super Saiyan Broly. Bio-Broly is a failed clone who can’t make use of Broly’s full power. Worse, he’s weak to water. In the end, Bio-Broly is easily defeated by Goten, Trunks, and Krillin. The most notable thing about Bio-Broly is that he was artificially created, but still had the means to turn Legendary Super Saiyan.

DBZ Broly’s Infinite Potential Makes Him an Immense Threat
The original version of Broly was specifically created to be the strongest villain in Dragon Ball Z. As revealed in his titular movie, it turns out that Goku was not the legendary Super Saiyan after all. Not only did Broly beat him to the punch, he has access to the genuine Legendary Super Saiyan transformation: a form that allows Broly to keep growing more powerful the longer he fights.
In his first movie, DBZ Broly is about as strong as Perfect Cell and Goku has to essentially defy all narrative logic to pull off the win. In The Second Coming, Broly would roughly scale to around Fat Buu levels of power. Unfortunatley, that would be that for Dragon Ball Z‘s version of Broly, as he’d soon be replaced with Bio-Brolly before being binned for the rest of the series.

Kale Almost Soloed the Tournament of Power
Kale was the first canon Legendary Super Saiyan in the series, just barely beating Dragon Ball Super‘s version of Broly to the punch by one story arc. Kale is introduced in the Universe Survival Saga as Universe 6’s ace in the hole. While she’s timid on the outside, Kale is hiding an immense amount of power. Once she activates her Legendary Super Saiyan form, she quickly becomes the most dangerous fighter in the Tournament of Power.
In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Kale eliminates several fighters and even manages to defeat Super Saiyan Blue Goku in a fight before Jiren steps in to knock her out of the form. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Legendary Super Saiyan Kale goes on a rampage that ends with her eliminating multiple universes from the tournament. The only reason she’s stopped is because Cabba slips a Potara on her ear, making her fuse with Caulifla.

Kefla is Universe 6’s Most Powerful Warrior & It Isn’t Even Close

Kefla is the result of Caulifla and Kale using the Potara Earrings to fuse together. Unlike other Fusions in the series, her Power Level varies greatly between continuities. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, Kale is only about as strong as Ultimate Gohan. Granted, this is still powerful, but she won’t be competing with the likes of Goku or Jiren. This is not the case at all in the Dragon Ball Super anime, where Kefla gets a massive power boost.
In the Dragon Ball Super anime’s Tournament of Power, Kefla is actually the third-strongest character on the roster, beating out both Vegeta and Toppo in the Top Five. She’s the only warrior other than Jiren who was strong enough to awaken Ultra Instinct Sign within Goku. Since Caulifla learns Super Saiyan 2 in the anime, Kefla technically uses Legendary Super Saiyan 2 in her fight against Goku.

Goku Brought the Legend of the Super Saiyan Back to Life – Twice
Goku may not be a literal Legendary Super Saiyan like Broly or Kale, but he was the Saiyan who actually brought the Legend back after the Ancient Saiyans died out. While fighting Frieza on Namek, Goku’s base form had grown so powerful, his body broke past its limits upon Krillin’s death, triggering the Super Saiyan form. Years later, Goku would perform the God Ritual to battle Beerus, becoming the first Super Saiyan God since Yamoshi.
Goku may not be the strongest Saiyan in Dragon Ball right now, but the rest of the Z-Fighters wouldn’t be where they are today if not for Goku’s breakthrough. Goku was the first person to become strong enough to unlock Super Saiyan, the first person to master SSJ1, and the first person to unlock Super Saiyan Blue. Goku may not be the Legendary Super Saiyan, but he’s a legendary Super Saiyan in his own right.
2
Karoly is Even Stronger Than Vegito
The only thing stronger than Goku and Vegeta fusing together? Goku and Broly fusing together – according to Dragon Ball Fusions, at least. The 3DS JRPG features a new form of Fusion created by Bulma called EX Fusion. Unlike the Fusion Dance or Potara Earrings, EX Fusions last as long as the users want it to, at the expense of only being slightly weaker than a regular fusion. Even with his handicap. Karoly is still canonically more powerful than Vegito. Karoly doesn’t have access to God Ki of any kind, but he doesn’t need it. His version of Legendary Super Saiyan is powerful enough to rival literal Gods and Angels.
At full power, Karoly would be able to sweep everyone from the Dragon Ball Super anime (as well as Gogeta from Dragon Ball Super: Broly). The manga’s power scaling starts getting a little crazy beginning with the Moro Saga, but Karoly would likely be able to defeat Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku and contend against the Granolah Saga’s many powerful fighters just fine. Karoly also has a Karoly Black variant by fusing with Goku Black, complete with a Legendary Super Saiyan Rosé form (though the synergy boost Broly gets from regular Goku makes Karoly the better Fusion).

Super Broly’s Full Power is Maximum
Broly is one of the most powerful characters in the Dragon Ball Super manga right now. As far as the Z-Fighters go, he’s second only to Gohan. In Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103, Broly ends up sparring with Gohan Beast. Due to Gohan’s immense power with his new form, Broly’s Legendary Super Saiyan transformation mutates into its True variant. True Legendary Super Saiyan allowed Broly to fully control himself while using his full strength.
Not only that, Saikyo Jump confirmed that if Broly had managed to tap into True Legendary Super Saiyan during his final battle with Gogeta Blue in Dragon Ball Super: Broly, he would have actually won. This means both Broly and Gohan are currently stronger than fusions. If anyone in the cast has the power to actually defeat Black Frieza once the manga comes back from hiatus, it’s Broly and Gohan (but they’ll certainly need help from Goku, Vegeta, and Piccolo).
