Call of Duty player says $280 Asus monitor saved them from stray bullet fired outside house

A Call of Duty player claims their Asus gaming monitor saved their life after a stray bullet flew through their wall and struck their screen during a late-night gaming session.

Reddit user ‘antisocialnae’ shared their terrifying experience on November 2, revealing how a $280 Asus TUF gaming monitor they purchased five years ago may have prevented a tragedy.

According to the player, they were enjoying some late-night Call of Duty when they suddenly heard loud bangs coming from outside. Unlike the gunfire in their game, these shots were very real.

Realizing something was wrong, they immediately dropped to the floor and called 911.

After speaking with the operator, the player checked their wall and discovered a bullet hole directly behind their gaming setup. Even more frightening, the bullet had struck their main monitor, but there was no exit hole.

“I couldn’t believe the monitor held the round in from possibly hitting me head on, hurting me really badly, or absolutely destroying my PC build depending on the trajectory it was going,” they explained.

The monitor in question was an Asus TUF VG258QM 280Hz display, which they purchased for $280 when building their first gaming setup five years earlier.

Understandably, the ordeal left them shaken.

“I cried so much when everything calmed down and I realized how close I was to meeting my maker,” they admitted.

Fortunately, they still have two other Asus monitors, although they hadn’t turned their PC back on to check whether it survived the incident.

The story is remarkably similar to a 2022 incident involving an Apex Legends YouTuber, whose monitor was struck by a bullet that reportedly missed his head by just three inches.

Asus responds after gaming monitor stops bullet

The incident quickly caught the attention of Asus, with a company representative responding directly to the Reddit thread.

“While we pride ourselves on making durable monitors and making gaming seem lifelike, your monitor definitely went above and beyond in both regards,” they wrote.

“We’ll reach out to you soon to see what we can do to honor its sacrifice.”

Naturally, someone had to ask the important question: “I take it as the warranty doesn’t cover stray 9mm rounds?”

The Asus representative joked that the damage would normally fall under customer-induced damage or an “act of god,” but suggested the unusual circumstances might warrant special consideration.

“Doesn’t mean we can support, but if you do customer service long enough, there are cases that obviously stand out from the rest,” they explained.

A replacement has not been confirmed, but the player already has a pretty good excuse for an upgrade.

And bizarrely, this isn’t the first time gaming hardware has taken a bullet for its owner in 2026. Back in June, a woman credited her gaming PC with saving her life after it deflected a shot fired through her neighbor’s wall.
