Burger King completely overhauls nuggets after customers called them ‘rubbery’

Burger King is completely overhauling its chicken nuggets after thousands of customers complained about the chain’s existing recipe.

The fast food giant says the change comes directly from feedback collected through a listening initiative launched earlier this year, which gave customers a way to contact the company with their thoughts on its food and restaurant experience.

According to Burger King, nuggets quickly emerged as one of the areas customers wanted changed, with complaints describing them as “rubbery,” “dry” and “disappointing.” The company has now responded with an entirely new recipe alongside a revamped lineup of dipping sauces.

Burger King says customers helped create its new nuggets

“We take Guest feedback seriously, and when we received thousands of texts, calls, and comments telling us our nuggets needed a total overhaul, we listened,” Burger King US and Canada Head Chef Amy Alarcon said.

“Our culinary team evaluated every element of the experience, from the chicken and breading to the sauces that bring it all together. Throughout the process, we invited real Guests, including some of our toughest critics, kids, to test and refine the recipe, helping us create a nugget we believe delivers the quality, taste and experience that they have been asking for.”

Burger King did not detail every change made to the chicken itself, but said its culinary team reevaluated the chicken, breading and sauces as part of the overhaul.

The chain is also changing its dipping sauce selection to accompany the new nuggets. That includes a new limited-time Special Savory Sauce combining creamy, tangy and lightly spicy flavors with BBQ seasoning, ketchup, garlic, onion and black pepper.

Honey Mustard has been reformulated to be richer and creamier, while the updated Buffalo sauce combines cayenne pepper with buttery and garlic flavors. Sweet & Sour has also been changed with pineapple flavor, tangy notes and a savory finish.

The nugget overhaul is the latest change stemming from Burger King’s customer feedback initiative. The company has also used responses to make changes involving the Whopper and its wider restaurant experience.

Burger King’s new Chicken Nuggets and updated dipping sauces will be available starting September 1, with the chain asking customers to continue sharing feedback after trying them.

McDonald’s is also making changes to its nugget lineup, with the chain confirming the return of Spicy Chicken McNuggets as another option for customers looking for more heat. The new nuggets add a spicy twist to the chain’s staple McNuggets as fast food rivals continue expanding their chicken offerings.
