The Shocktober season is here, and it’s Halloween time in Clash Royale. To celebrate, we have the Spooky Chess League event. It replaces Royal Shuffle and will run for 14 days, from October 5 to October 19. It’s a chess-based event with mechanics that are quite different from the regular game mode. Below, you will find everything you need to know about Spooky Chess League in Clash Royale, along with some of the best decks I’ve personally used while playing the event.

This has been my go to deck for Spooky Chess League. Thanks to Hero Bowler and Evo Executioner, it feels really strong. The thing about Spooky Chess League is that there are always lots of enemies on the field, and you are going to be under constant pressure. So you need cards in your deck that can deal good splash damage. In my opinion, Evo Executioner and Hero Bowler are both great for this.
Then there’s Ronin. You will see a lot of Dark Princes in this event, and I’ve even seen some players using Mega Knight. Ronin is great for dealing with them, so I definitely recommend keeping him in the deck.

This deck is also really strong in Spooky Chess League. It has great defense with Evo Witch, Evo Furnace, and Evo Executioner. All three can deal good splash damage, which is exactly what you’ll need the most in Spooky Chess League. You also have a few spells in the deck. Zap, Arrows, and Vines can help deal with the opponent’s towers as well as low HP troops.
For your Evo slots, there’s going to be a bit of a conflict since there are quite a few good cards to choose from. I personally prefer Evo Executioner over Hero Bowler, but you can go with Hero Bowler if you prefer it.

I was skeptical about Giant Skeleton at first, but it works really well in Spooky Chess League. Since there are constantly enemies around, its bomb gets a lot of value. In most matchups, I’ve found it to be really good on defense.
This deck follows the same idea as the others. You have cards that can deal splash damage, along with spells to deal with towers. Regular Witch is weak, but since it’s only a one-cycle evolution, you will get back to Evo Witch in no time. I prefer Skeleton Dragons in this deck, but you can also use Flying Machine instead. Skeleton Dragons deal more damage, and you can split them into two lanes to get more value.
How Does the Spooky Chess League Work in Clash Royale
The biggest difference between Spooky Chess League and the regular mode is all the towers. Instead of one King Tower and two Princess Towers, you have a whole wall of towers placed like chess pieces. These towers are protected by Guards, and you will also find troops like Executioner and Mother Witch behind them.
Another thing you’ll notice pretty early is the Dark Prince Towers. These towers keep releasing Dark Princes at regular intervals. It is not a Draft event, so you bring your own deck.
Best Strategy For the Spooky Chess League in Clash Royale
The first and most important thing to do is get rid of your opponent’s wall of towers. Your main target should especially be the Dark Prince Tower since it can be a real pain. It keeps releasing Dark Princes until you destroy it, so dealing with it should be a priority.
This is where spells become really important in Spooky Chess League. Use them to keep chipping away at your opponent’s towers. Whenever you see an opening or think you have an Elixir advantage, don’t be afraid to use your spells. If you can also hit some enemy troops with them, even better. However, only small spells are allowed in this mode.
The next thing you should have in your deck is some good splash damage. If you ask me, Evo Executioner and Hero Bowler are the best options. Evo Witch and Evo Furnace are also in a great spot. I wouldn’t really recommend Wizard since he just feels weak here. The Princess can also work, but pretty much everyone is using spells, so she probably won’t get much value.
You don’t really need a win condition in Spooky Chess League. I’ve seen some players use Battle Ram and Hog Rider, but they don’t provide much value since there are so many towers. And of course, you are also going to have plenty of Dark Princes coming at you.
Banned Cards in Spooky Chess League Clash Royale
Spooky Chess League originally let players use every card, but that didn’t last very long. Some cards were clearly too strong for a mode like this, especially the big spells. Supercell has now banned several cards, including Miner, which can be placed directly on towers and would be too easy to abuse.
- Earthquake
- Lightning
- Rocket
- Fireball
- Poison
- Void
- Royal Recruits
- Miner
- Goblin Drill.
