Best ARs in COD MW4, Ranked

Assault rifles are the jacks of all trades in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. They’re effective at every engagement distance, and they can be built to specialize at fighting within certain ranges if players so choose to do so. There are eight ARs in MW4 as of the launch version, and if you want some insight as to which ones perform the best, here’s a quick rundown covering each gun.

Updated November 6, 2026 by Marc Santos: The launch of COD MW4 Season 1 added the Cronen Osprey and made some additional balance changes to assault rifles on top of the balancing pass from the October 30 patch, knocking the Han out of the top spot as a result. We’ve updated this guide to better reflect the state of the MW4 assault rifle meta as of Season 1.

Best Assault Rifles in MW4 Overview

  1. Cronen Osprey
  2. M4
  3. Kastov 762
  4. Patriot XMR
  5. Axion
  6. Cronen Squall
  7. Han 86
  8. Oden
  9. Hyeon Burst

This ranked list is mainly based on ease of use. Every assault rifle in Modern Warfare 4 can compete fairly well when used in their intended engagement range, but the ones on the top of this list shine brighter than the others simply due to how much easier they are to use relative to the power they have.

Cronen Osprey

The Cronen Osprey combines moderate bullet damage with a high fire rate and ludicrously good accuracy via a recoil pattern that’s extremely forgiving. This assault rifle is worryingly good, and by that, I mean it’s probably going to get nerfed.

This weapon shoots like the Han, but at a fire rate faster than the M4’s. It kills enemies faster than both of these guns, but the Cronen Osprey’s effectiveness is limited by its relatively short max damage range of just 25 meters. Regardless, if you can hit all of your shots (which is extremely easy to do with this gun), you’ll be putting the vast majority of your enemies down faster than they can do the same to you, all without expending nearly as much effort in controlling your recoil.

The Cronen Osprey’s Apex Attachments turns it into a semi-automatic weapon with a dual-barreled receiver and a duplex trigger mechanism — the gun fires one shot every time you pull or release the trigger, giving it an unmatched fire rate among all semi-auto weapons.

M4

The classic M4 rifle returns as an ever-reliable weapon that’s both easy to learn and to master. It doesn’t hit as hard as any of the higher-caliber rifles (with the M4 requiring one more bullet to kill on average), but given its faster fire rate and recoil pattern that’s much easier to control, the M4 still remains a competitive option for CoD MW4 multiplayer, especially if you make builds for it that lean heavily toward certain aspects like movement and ranged damage.

The M4’s Apex Attachment converts it into an M4 Hurricane, turning it into a top-fed rifle that takes P90 magazines. Equipping this will improve the M4’s handling, but reduce its damage over range.

Kastov 762

This is another returning classic that retains its reputation as a hard-hitting, but hard-kicking assault rifle. The Kastov 762 is powerful enough to put someone down with just three hits if one of your shots lands on their head, but such power comes at the cost of the gun having harsh recoil, both in terms of visual kick and pattern (the latter is almost purely diagonal).

The Kastov’s Apex Attachment equips it with an experimental EMP barrel, which can be toggled to fire energy blasts that disable electronics, damage vehicles, and knock players away if they’re close enough.

Patriot XMR

The Patriot is a step below the Kastov in terms of firepower — this rifle requires one additional bullet to kill compared to the Kastov, but since the Patriot’s unique recoil pattern makes it kick vertically upward before leaning hard to the left, this weapon is a lot easier to control when firing short bursts, making it very good for holding medium-long sight lines. The Patriot’s no slouch in CQB either, so don’t be afraid to get up close and personal with it.

The Patriot’s Apex Attachment gives the weapon an underbarrel taser that fires shotgun blasts of electric darts. The darts shock enemies, hampering movement and forcing them to fire their weapon uncontrollably.

Axion

The Axion performs very similarly to the Han and M4. It’s fairly easy to handle, but unlike those guns, this one can kill in four shots to the upper chest. Additionally, it prevents enemy skulls from appearing on the enemy team’s HUD by default if you take targets down with it. The main issue with the Axion is its low muzzle velocity, which makes hitting moving targets beyond ~25 meters harder than usual.

The Apex Attachment for the Axion replaces the weapon’s pistol grip with a chainsaw grip, complete with a matching horizontal bar foregrip. Pair this with the 100-round mag attachment to turn the Axion into a close-quarters hipfire menace.

Cronen Squall

The Cronen Squall is designed for medium-long ranges. The combination of its stable recoil and relatively slow fire rate (673 RPM) makes it a prime candidate for long-range setups with long barrels and scopes, and it’s not bad at close quarters either if you build it for speed. It’s arguably the most comfortable to use among the hard-hitting assault rifles, and it would’ve outranked the Kastov if it didn’t have a pre-fire delay and a small base magazine of only 20 rounds.

The Cronen Squall’s Apex Attachment is an underbarrel missile launcher. Projectiles fired from it can be steered mid-flight, giving you additional options for flushing out enemies camping in certain spots.

Han 86

The Han 86 in MW4 quickly became a fan-favorite weapon when the game first launched, but following a nerf to its bullet damage, it simply became a slower-firing Cronen Osprey and M4. The Han is still a great assault rifle because of its very controllable recoil pattern, but it will likely lose head-on firefights against other harder-hitting or faster-firing guns, especially if you fail to hit the first shot.

The Han’s Apex Attachment gives the weapon an airburst grenade launcher. Holding the fire button while using the launcher will change the distance at which its projectiles explode.

Oden

This .50-cal rifle boasts the highest damage per shot value out of all assault rifles in MW4, capable of three-shotting people to the upper chest, and two-shotting enemies to the head. However, the Oden’s fire rate is also one of the slowest in the category, and while its muzzle doesn’t climb as harshly as others, it still kicks like a mule. Because of these traits, this assault rifle feels more like a fully-automatic marksman rifle, so you’ll have to adjust your playstyle accordingly if you want to get the most value out of this weapon.

The Oden is far from a terrible gun (it’s actually my favorite in the arsenal so far), but its slow fire rate and disorienting recoil makes missing with it more punishing than any of the other rifles above.

The Oden’s Apex Attachment turns it into a semi-automatic sniper rifle that can instantly kill targets if hit in the head, further cementing its identity as a long-ranged weapon. If you’re close enough, it can one-shot enemies in the upper chest too.

Hyeon Burst

As its name suggests, the Hyeon Burst is a burst-fire weapon, and if you’ve played older Call of Duty games, you probably already know what to expect from this thing. The Hyeon Burst is far from being a weak and terrible weapon, but it is leagues more punishing compared to the other assault rifles, as missing your first burst will likely spell death for you.

However, if your aim is good, and if you can comfortably play around the Hyeon’s one-burst-kill range, the Hyeon Burst becomes extremely powerful, enough to contend for the number one spot in the meta.

The Apex Attachment for the Hyeon Burst turns it into a fully-automatic weapon with a Hyperburst feature — its first three shots will fire near instantly, while subsequent rounds are fired at a much slower rate. Equipping this easily shoots the Hyeon several tiers up this list.
