AI K-pop band under fire after creators “impregnated” member to write her out of group

An AI-generated K-Pop group is facing backlash after its creators announced that one of its virtual members was pregnant, only to reveal they made up the story to write her out of the band.

BABYQUEEN is a Chinese AI girl group styled after South Korean K-Pop acts. The virtual group launched in September 2026, with five fictional members and social media accounts documenting their activities.

However, things took a bizarre turn in October when the group’s fictional management company, BABYPVSSY Entertainment, announced that member Mity was pregnant and would be taking maternity leave.

The October 12 announcement explained that Mity would be suspending her group activities to prioritize her “health” and prepare for childbirth. Fans were also asked not to speculate about her personal life.

The following day, Mity’s account shared another statement confirming the pregnancy, alongside an image of the virtual idol lying in bed wearing pink pajamas.

The announcement quickly went viral, with the topic reportedly attracting more than 78 million views on Chinese social media platform Weibo, according to the South China Morning Post.

AI K-Pop group’s creators reveal reason for “pregnancy”

The bizarre storyline sparked widespread criticism, with social media users questioning how an AI-generated character could become pregnant in the first place.

As reported by Sixth Tone, some accused the creators of trivializing women’s reproductive experiences by using pregnancy as a publicity stunt.

Others mocked the announcement, questioning who the fictional baby’s father could possibly be.

The backlash ultimately prompted the group’s creators to explain what had happened, admitting that Mity’s pregnancy was a way manage fewer AI personalities.

In a since-deleted post, the team revealed that managing multiple AI personalities had become exhausting, leading them to invent a reason for Mity to temporarily leave the group.

“We’re just a few girls who like K-Pop, and we’re still students,” the creators explained, adding that they had experienced harassment and had not made any money from the project.

According to Trending on Weibo, the creators acknowledged choosing an inappropriate explanation for Mity’s departure.

Despite the controversy, BABYQUEEN’s management suggested Mity could eventually return in a different role, potentially pursuing acting or becoming a maternity and infant content creator.

The controversy comes as AI-generated musicians continue to blur the line between real and virtual performers. Earlier in 2026, an AI-generated Japanese metal band became a real-life group after its creator hired musicians to perform its songs.

Meanwhile, K-Pop fans were previously left baffled by MPREG, a supposed boy group built around a male pregnancy concept, with many questioning whether the project was an elaborate AI stunt.

AI musicians have also found mainstream success, with one virtual artist attracting millions of monthly Spotify listeners, while Bandcamp banned AI-generated music entirely amid concerns over fake artists.
