California Governor Gavin Newsom shared his honest reaction after President Trump promoted Stephen Miller as Chief of Staff.

Governor Gavin Newsom reacted to Stephen Miller’s promotion as President Trump’s new Chief of Staff. In a post shared on his X account on November 6, 2026, he did not mince his words and believes it was an insult to people who voted against cruelty and extremism.
“Donald Trump just promoted one of the most vile thugs to ever slither into the Oval Office. This is an insult to every American who voted for change on Tuesday. Stephen Miller cooked up the sadistic mass deportation regime that ripped apart families and trampled basic civil rights. Innocent people are dead because of him. Voters rejected his cruelty and extremism. This is sick.”
Stephen Miller originally served as deputy chief of staff and homeland security adviser. He built the administration’s deportation machinery and set a target of 3,000 arrests per day. Under his direction, Immigration and Customs Enforcement pursued people with no criminal records. Masked agents staged raids in cities across the country. Miller officially becomes chief of staff on November 9, 2026.

The governor believes this is the president’s way of doubling down amidst the midterm election results. President Donald Trump announced the change in a Truth Social post on November 6, 2026. That came three days after Democrats won the House and the Senate.
Susie Wiles, Miller’s predecessor, is being moved to the Trump Political Operation. After the defeat of the Republican Party, there were demands for her exit that had started earlier. Caroline Sunshine, a former Trump staffer, called on Wiles to step aside during a Fox News appearance on November 4, 2026. She described the losses as a staff and messaging failure.
From Newsom’s point of view, the promotion rewards the official most tied to the policy voters punished. He argued Americans had already rejected Miller’s record at the ballot box. Ultimately, the governor framed the promotion as an insult to voters who took a stand against this during the elections.
