Senator Chuck Schumer gave his honest opinion about President Donald Trump’s pick of Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff within hours. The New York Democrat posted his response on X on Friday, November 6, 2026, and he claims the president could not have made a worse choice.

“Donald Trump learned nothing from his historic defeat.
Stephen Miller is the architect of the most barbaric, inhumane policies of this administration. Trump couldn’t have made a worse choice.
Our Democratic majorities will fight him every step of the way.”

Republicans lost both chambers in the November 3 midterms. Stephen Miller originally served as the deputy White House chief of staff and Homeland Security adviser. Miller will start his new role on November 9, 2026.

Schumer has represented New York in the Senate since 1999 and has led Senate Democrats since 2017. He was majority leader from 2021 to 2025. Democrats won 54 Senate seats, counting two independents who caucus with them. Days before the election, he sarcastically responded to the president’s offer to report voter fraud.

Chuck Schumer described Miller’s record as barbaric and inhumane and the appointment as the worst option available. Miller has been the driving force behind the deportation campaign that defined Trump’s second term. The president announced the change on Truth Social and called Miller one of his most trusted advisors.

On the other hand, California Governor Gavin Newsom reached the same verdict in his own post on X that day. Newsom took the promotion as an insult to American voters who are against extremism. Both Democrats read the appointment as a decision to escalate rather than regroup. Despite Miller’s promotion, Schumer promised that Democratic majorities would fight the new chief of staff at every step.
