Before Asta and Yuno’s rivalry drives the plot forward in Black Clover, several ancient characters have already influenced the significant events that define the hit shonen series. They laid the groundwork for the explosive conflicts and unpredictable twists that the current generation of mages face.
Among them, the strongest ancient characters in Black Clover wield extraordinary magic powers, allowing them to shape history and even influence the fate of the living world and the underworld. More impressively, they still rank as some of the most powerful characters in the series.

Secre Swallowtail’s Sealing Magic Is Anything But Weak
Secre Swallowtail has been around for over 500 years in Black Clover. He is Lemiel Silvamillion Clover’s loyal servant, who assisted the first Wizard King in all things related to magic tool creation. She also assisted Lemiel in defending the kingdom against Zagred, using her high-level sealing magic to seal the high-ranking devil with Eternal Prison.
While Secre seemingly has a useless magic attribute, her sealing magic proves to be an incredibly useful ability to both Lemiel and the Black Bulls. Beyond sealing objects, beings, and the like, she can use it for healing purposes, sealing injuries of her allies in the process.

Undine Can Make Her Human Hosts Far More Powerful
Among the elemental spirits, Undine is the only one confirmed to have existed for over a century. As the devoted guardian of the Heart Kingdom’s royal family, she forms contracts with its princesses, sharing her immense magic power with worthy successors, such as Princess Lolopechka.
As the elemental spirit of water, Undine naturally excels at Water Magic. She serves her hosts to the best of her abilities, allowing them to access her immense magical power and unleash devastating water-based spells. At one point in the series, Undine even forms a temporary contract with Noelle Silva, enabling her to reach the Saint Stage and become capable of fighting high-ranking devils.

Ursula Bloodlord Is a Powerful Witch Whose True Potential Remains Untapped
Ursula Bloodlord is one of those powerful characters in Black Clover who rarely gets the chance to show their true potential in battle. Despite the Witch Queen’s immense magical power, her limited screen time leaves much of her strength unexplored, making her one of the series’ most underrated mages.
Regardless, Ursula Bloodlord remains a formidable witch whom Asta and his friends can rely on in the most difficult situations. Whether she is breaking an ancient curse, healing the wounded, or fighting an army of enemy mages, her versatile magic makes her a valuable ally in battle. Even after stepping down as the Witch Queen by the end of the series, Ursula remains a powerhouse.

Lemiel Silvamillion Clover Is One of the Greatest Wizard Kings in Clover Kingdom
As Clover Kingdom’s first Wizard King, Lemiel Silvamillion Clover sets the standard for power and magical prowess. His magic power is said to be beautiful and quiet, yet he possesses incredibly destructive Light Magic spells that allow him to overwhelm formidable opponents like Demon Licht and the devil Zagred.
Beyond his high-level Light Magic spells, Lemiel is also a gifted magic craftsman. He is the creator of Elsdocia, one of the Clover Kingdom’s most powerful weapons, proving just how versatile his magical expertise is beyond combat. On the battlefield, Lemiel can defend the entire Clover Kingdom singlehandedly, unleashing explosive bursts of light against his enemies.

Licht Is the Elf Tribe’s Strongest Fighter
The elf tribe leader, Licht, is a ridiculously powerful elf with exceptional sword magic. He is also the original wielder of Asta’s three ancient swords and the five-leaf clover grimoire that houses his anti-magic. As such, Licht demonstrates remarkable control over these swords, wielding them with such precision and power that he forces Asta and Yuno to retreat in combat. His speed also surpasses both young mages, who struggle to sense his magic.
In addition, Licht can draw power from his fellow elves and channel their collective strength into a devastating singular attack. This powerful spell is strong enough to disintegrate a formidable devil like Zagred, along with his underworld portal. It goes without saying that no other elf in the series compares to him in power.

Zagred Manipulates Elves and Mages Alike
Zagred is one of the most terrifying high-ranking devils in Black Clover to ever antagonize Asta, Yuno, and the entirety of the Clover Kingdom. He is notorious for his incredibly manipulative schemes, from the successful orchestration of the heartbreaking Elf Massacre to the second coming of the corrupted elves in the series.
On the battlefield, Zagred isn’t a weak opponent either. Taking him down requires a coordinated effort from some of the best mages in Clover Kingdom, including Lemiel and Licht, who combine their strength with Asta and Yuno to take down the powerful devil. He can imitate magic, summon magic-absorbing underworld monsters, and even alter his surroundings with speech magic alone.

Lucifero Is Stronger Than All Magic Knight Captains Combined
Only a select few villains in Black Clover can completely overwhelm a Magic Knight captain, but Lucifero, the King of Devils, effortlessly outclasses even the strongest captains in his incomplete form. Not even Yami Sukehiro or the undefeated Mereoleona Vermillion can defeat him alone, demonstrating just how powerful the ruler of the underworld truly is.
In his perfect form, Lucifero possesses enough power to destroy the world. His Gravity Magic can render even powerful mages unconscious, crushing them under immense gravitational pressure before they can even fight back. It takes a group of the Clover Kingdom’s strongest fighters to stand a chance against Lucifero.
