New Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave DLC Just Turned Its Story Into a Waiting Game

Players who are already eager for more Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave content got great news recently, with developer Intelligent Systems announcing an official DLC. An expansion is exciting enough, but that’s simply the tip of the iceberg. The Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave DLC will arrive in three separate waves, adding to the game’s content over several months and even into next year. Wave 1 and Wave 2 bring forth solid additional content, but the real star of the DLC is undoubtedly Wave 3, because it expands the story in a huge way by introducing four new protagonist stories.

The different protagonists in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave are already handled in a pretty exciting way. Unlike Three Houses, Fortune’s Weave allows players to jump back and forth between the four main protagonists and their storylines instead of having to do a new playthrough to see every side of the narrative. Fortune’s Weave‘s four protagonists already have hours upon hours of content to offer players, but the expansion sets out to open the door to four more characters. As exciting as Wave 3 is, the timing could make its arrival either a celebration or deeply frustrating.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave’s Story Expansion Is Both a Blessing and a Curse

On the bright side, fans now have confirmation that they will get to experience even more sides to the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave story once Wave 3 of the expansion rolls around. The downside, though, is that players won’t get to see this new chapter until 2027. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems haven’t even announced an official release date yet. All that’s known at the moment is that Wave 3 will come out sometime next year, and that means fans could have a serious waiting game on their hands.

Characters Confirmed for Fortune’s Weave’s Expansion

  • Talimun
  • Orchel

Intelligent Systems has shared in the past that Fortune’s Weave was originally intended to have eight protagonists instead of four, and this DLC lets that vision come to fruition. Between the current Fortune’s Weave characters spotlighting protagonists like Cai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Leda, and the fifth and final protagonist, Eshmel, the game already has a lot of connecting storylines to keep players engaged until Wave 3. The problem is that there are already players who have made it through the entire game.

Wave 1 of the Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave expansion has already been released, adding four new weapons to the in-game arsenal for players to choose from. Wave 2 is expected to release around the 2026 holiday season and will add new outfits and allies.

Of course, the number of players who haven’t beaten Fortune’s Weave definitely outnumber those who have. As is custom with some of the best JRPGs in the industry, Fortune’s Weave takes a ridiculously long time to beat. It isn’t one of the longest RPGs of all time, but players will still find themselves playing for around 80–100 hours just to experience every protagonist’s role in the story.

The Wait for New Story Content Could Either Reward Fortune’s Weave Players or Test Their Patience

The timing of Fortune’s Weave‘s story expansion is incredibly important. If Intelligent Systems plans on releasing Wave 3 in the first or second quarter of 2027, waiting probably won’t give rise to that much player fatigue. However, if the developer is aiming for more of a third or fourth quarter launch window, then fans might start to get antsy about such a long wait. There have been plenty of story expansions that have taken a year or two to come around. The recent Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen expansion and Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077 are just a few examples.

Fortune’s Weave was originally intended to have eight protagonists instead of four…

Just because waiting long periods for story expansion is the norm doesn’t mean it’s easy, though. Some players are bound to feel like Wave 3 is a reward for sticking with the game for so long, but there is just as much validity to the feelings of players who have felt more like they have been stuck in limbo. There might even be JRPG fans who wait to start playing Fortune’s Weave until all the content has been released just so they don’t have to worry about beating the base game and waiting around for more story.

Storytelling is an essential piece of the Fire Emblem games, and while it makes sense to save the best part of the expansion for last, it’s also understandably maddening. Thankfully, a lot of fans still have dozens of hours left before they experience everything Fortune’s Weave‘s main story has to offer. Whether it’s the main four protagonist paths or side content, the newest chapter in the franchise definitely isn’t lacking. Yes, Intelligent Systems is forcing players to wait longer to see every single side of the game’s narrative, but if it’s anything like the base game, then it will be well worth the wait.
