Governor Gavin Newsom reacts to a viral clip of Trump’s new press office secretary answering a question about her bar exam.

California Governor Gavin Newsom reacted to a viral video of Trump’s new Press Secretary, Katie Zacharia, admitting that she passed her bar exams when she moved to China.
“Our new White House press secretary appears to be a Chinese lawyer?” Newsom said, in an X post. Note that she reportedly practiced international transaction law and that the question concerns which US state bar she passed
The video was recorded on the White House South Lawn as Trump prepared to travel to Alaska for a campaign rally. A reporter asked Trump which state Zacharia had passed the bar exam in.
“When I moved to China,” Zacharia responded as Trump turned to face her.
The answer did not identify a state where she had passed the bar exam. This prompted further questions about her legal background.

According to a report from The Hill, a White House official said Zacharia moved to China with her husband after graduating from law school because of his work at a US private equity firm. The official added that Zacharia worked in international transaction law during that period.
Additionally, the report further states that NewsNation asked for clarification, to which she responded that she had practiced international transaction law “with all the appropriate credentials.” However, she did not specify whether she had passed a US state bar examination.
White House communications director Steven Cheung also did not directly address questions about where Zacharia passed the bar exam. Instead, he praised her appointment, describing her as a “fabulous and wonderful addition to the team.”
