The Akatsuki was an extremely powerful and dangerous group composed almost entirely of S-rank rogue ninjas. In fact, most of its members are considered among the strongest ninjas in the Naruto franchise. The Akatsuki’s ultimate goal was to collect the Tailed Beasts and take over the world to end conflict, and its members killed some powerful characters along the way.
Many of the strongest Naruto characters that the Akatsuki killed were Jinchuriki who wielded the power of a Tailed Beast, and they all died after their Tailed Beasts were extracted. They also killed some elite Jonin-level shinobi. Most of the Akatsuki’s members were Kage-level, so it is not surprising that some members killed an actual Kage and a legendary ninja who was worthy of becoming Hokage.
Chiriku Was a Top-Tier Ninja Monk Who Once Served as a Member of the Twelve Guardian Ninja
The Twelve Guardian Ninja was a group of elite shinobi who were tasked with protecting the Land of Fire’s Feudal Lord, making them one of the strongest ninja groups in the Naruto franchise. Chiriku was once part of this group and went on to become the Fire Temple’s most powerful ninja monk. His skills were so revered that a bounty of 30,000,000 ryo was placed on his head on the black market.
Kakuzu and Hidan visited the Fire Temple to claim Chiriku’s bounty, and it was during this confrontation that the monk revealed his full power. Chiriku mastered the temple’s ultimate technique, which summons the spirit of the Thousand-Armed Kannon to fight on his behalf. Chiriku was ultimately killed by Hidan’s curse, but if both Akatsuki members were not immortal, he might have defeated them.
Asuma Sarutobi Was One of the Hidden Leaf Village’s Elite Jonin
Asuma was the son of the Third Hokage and was considered one of the Hidden Leaf Village’s elite Jonin. Like Chiriku, Asuma was also part of the Twelve Guardian Ninja until the group was dissolved, but his 35,000,000 ryo bounty indicates he was stronger than Chiriku. Even Kabuto deemed him strong enough to be resurrected during the Fourth Great Ninja War.
Asuma was a lethal melee fighter who primarily used a pair of ninja knuckle knives which he imbued with chakra to form sharp chakra blades. He specialized in Wind and Fire Release, and his jutsu of choice involved producing a thick cloud of gunpowder-infused ash that causes intense explosions. He may have severed Hidan’s head, but Kakuzu reattached it, and Hidan ended up killing him with his voodoo doll-like curse.
Yugito Nii Was the Two-Tails Jinchuriki When She Was Captured by the Zombie Duo
Yugito was a Kunoichi from the Hidden Cloud Village, and despite not being a Perfect Jinchuriki, she could perform a complete Tailed Beast transformation. This means she could transform into the Two-Tails at will, which is what she did when she lured Hidan and Kakuzu into a trap. Unfortunately, the zombie duo proved to be too strong, and she was defeated by Hidan’s curse.
Hidan would have killed Yugito on the spot, but she instead died after the Akatsuki extracted the Two-Tails from her body. Yugito was a very strong ninja, to the point that even Killer B admired her skills. She could grow her nails into long claws that could clash evenly with swords, and her flaming hairballs would explode on contact. When she transformed, she could produce massive fireballs that were powerful enough to destroy entire buildings.
Roshi Was the Four-Tails Jinchuriki When He Was Defeated by Kisame
Roshi was a veteran ninja from the Hidden Stone Village and served as the Four-Tails’ last Jinchuriki. Despite being a Jinchuriki for multiple decades, he never gained access to the Tailed Beast’s full power, but he could still fully manifest the Four-Tails and use its Tailed Beast Ball attack. With this technique, Roshi could wipe out a village.
Thanks to the Four-Tails, Roshi learned to use the Lava Release Kekkei Genkai, which allowed him to shoot molten rocks from his mouth and cover himself in lava armor. Roshi fought Kisame one-on-one and lost due to a combination of Samehada’s chakra absorption abilities and Kisame’s overwhelming Water Release techniques. He was captured by the Akatsuki and died after his Tailed Beast was extracted.
Han was another Jinchuriki from the Hidden Stone Village, but he had the Five-Tails sealed inside him. He gained fame during the Third Great Ninja War because of his Steam Release Kekkei Genkai, which he inherited from his Tailed Beast. Han used steam to boil his chakra, which augmented all of his physical abilities, making him a real taijutsu threat.
Han could perform a complete Tailed Beast transformation, meaning he can vaporize a small area with a Tailed Beast Ball attack. It is not clear which Akatsuki duo defeated Han, but it happened some time before Yugito was captured. Like the other captured Jinchuriki, Han died when the Akatsuki sealed the Five-Tails inside the Gedo Statue.
Utakata Was the Six-Tails Jinchuriki When Pain Captured Him
Utakata became the Jinchuriki of the Six-Tails during the Hidden Mist Village’s infamous Bloody Mist era. He could summon his Tailed Beast cloak and assume a miniature Tailed Beast form, but he could not use all the Six-Tails’ abilities; otherwise, he would have been able to produce highly corrosive substances. He could transform into the Six-Tails, but he could not control it.
Utakata used a special type of ninjutsu which involved various types of bubbles. Canonically, Utakata was captured and killed by the Akatsuki some time after Gaara was caught, but before Yugito was taken. In the anime, Pain personally defeats Utakata after confronting him with all six of his bodies. Utakata took down two of Pain’s bodies, but he was eventually overwhelmed.

Fu Was the Seven-Tails Jinchuriki When She Was Captured by the Akatsuki
The Hidden Waterfall Village was the only minor ninja village with a Tailed Beast, and Fu was its final Jinchuriki. She was the vessel of the Seven-Tails, and seeing as she could access its immense chakra, she was one of the Ninja World’s strongest female ninjas. The full extent of her control remains unknown, but she could use some of the beast’s tails as insect wings.
Fu never became a Chunin, but she had the power to destroy an entire village on her own. In the manga, it is believed that the Akatsuki captured and killed Fu some time before Gaara had his Tailed Beast extracted. In the anime, though, it is shown that Hidan and Kakuzu confronted her after the Chunin Exams. It is not known which one landed the final blow, but the immortal duo were the ones to bring her in.
The Third Kazekage Is Considered the Strongest Kazekage in History
The Third Kazekage died roughly five years before the start of the series, and he is still considered to be the Hidden Sand Village’s strongest Kazekage. By studying the Jinchuriki of the One-Tails, he created the Iron Sand, which is still regarded as the village’s most powerful weapon. He was so strong that an Akatsuki member intentionally killed him in order to acquire his abilities.
Sasori was the Sand Village’s most skilled puppet master, and he kidnapped and killed the Third Kazekage on his own when he was already part of the Akatsuki. Sasori turned the Third Kazekage into his strongest human puppet. Sasori used the Third Kazekage like an ordinary puppet, but he could also use his Iron Sand techniques to crush experienced shinobi.
Jiraiya Was a Hokage Candidate Who Could Have Defeated Pain if He Had More Time
Jiraiya was part of the Hidden Leaf Village’s Three Legendary Sannin, meaning he was one of the strongest shinobi that the Leaf has ever produced. He was personally trained by the Third Hokage, and trained Minato and Naruto, who both went on to become the strongest Kage of their generations. Jiraiya was so powerful that even Itachi believed he and Kisame could not defeat him in a 2v1.
Jiraiya died while infiltrating the Hidden Rain Village to learn more about Pain, the Akatsuki’s leader. Pain wielded the Rinnegan and split his godly power between six bodies, which is why Jiraiya ultimately died at his hands. That said, Pain admitted Jiraiya would have defeated him if he had learned the secret of the Six Paths of Pain sooner.
